Geez, at least give people a little time to make a joke before you do the corrections....it's not like I can refresh every 3 seconds, I'm trying to work, here....
I have a favorite tree in front of the Silver Cloud Inn to which I lock my bike. In two or three summers it will have grown too wide for my U-Lock. Perhaps by then Safeco will have a bike rack.
The Cop Rape story has somehow got conflated with the bike story. The "post comments" and the title appear to be the Cop Rape story, and the middle is the bike story.
They probably know how squeamish pedestrians are around bikes and would rather avoid encouraging you to ride anywhere near Safeco Field. This of course would be easily mitigated by insisting people walk their bikes near the stadium, or provide a path that will navigate them away from foot traffic congestion and toward the racks, which could be accomplished for very little money.
Comparing Seattle to Chicago is like apples and oranges. Comparing it to, say, the alternative transportation nightmare that is LA and one quickly begins to see how fucking lucky you are.
Safeco paid to put their name on the gate, but I bet they didn't pay you to use their name that many times. Why does anyone call it that, in the media or in real life, for free? "The baseball stadium," or "Mariner's field" work just as well.
But there are bike racks outside SAM... Isn't that the better comparison?
Or Wrigley Field to Safeco Field?
"The Chicago Cubs offer a free courtesy bike valet service for all Cubs home games. Sponsored by SRAM and World Bicycle Relief, the bike valet is located on the northeast corner of Clark and Waveland.
Bicycles are claim checked and secured during the game. The courtesy bike valet opens two hours prior to each game's scheduled start time and closes one hour after the game ends."
No bike rack there either apparently...
Your point of comparison makes about as much sense as saying “I can ride a ferry boat form Colman Dock but not O’Hare International Airport! What up with that?”
Maybe one of the local cycling groups should do something about it… like they did in Chicago.
@15 - Yes, the lion is wearing a helmet. We have Hawks Fever! The Michael Jordon statue outside the United Center has been wearing a Blackhawks jersey and hockey skates for awhile, too.
I've ridden my bike to Safeco and had no problem, mostly because I locked it in the bike cage in the garage where it was far more safe than locked to some garbage can.
But then, where would we be without Dan's daily dose of outrageous outrage?
The lions outside the Art Institute were wearing Blackhawks helmets while the Hawks were in the playoffs and for a while after they won the Stanley Cup. The might even still be there.
They did the same think both times the Bears were in the Super Bowl. Not only that but the Brontosaurus outside the Field Museum gets a team jersey and the Picasso sculture in Daly Plaza is bedecked with a hat.

Or another way to handle it, and to add a more direct link to #7's post:
