My mom used to raise all sorts of livestock. Her trick to getting a prizewinning fair pig was feeding it beer mixed with jello--high calorie and (from the pig's perspective) delicious. I imagine it's a similar thing for the cattle.
It already seems insane to some vegitarians that people feed perfectly good food to animals, so that they can eat those animals and get a small fraction of that nutrition back. But at least you normally end up with food. Wasting gallons of perfectly good wine and you don't even get a buzz from the beef???
I hear if you feed cows diamonds it makes them taste even better.
What I don't understand is why beef needs to be extra-tender. If you don't want something to sink your teeth into and chew down on, you shouldn't be eating red meat.
