Yesterday, Mayor Mike McGinn joined the Seattle Channel's C.R. Douglas (heartheartheart) for their monthly fireside chat, Ask the Mayor.
During the hour-long program, McGinn defends his grab at $7 million that some say should go to the Museum of History and Industry. He says the city needs to keep that money; the Seattle City Council says that would be breaking a deal with MOHAI (and call into question the city's ability to negotiate with anyone in good faith).
Start at the 50:50 mark for MOHAI: "We never agreed to give them any money from the sale of the land," says McGinn. "Now is not the time for one nonprofit, no matter how worthy it is, to try and get everything it can out of the city. They got 40 million dollars—18 million more than anticipated... We don't have to sell land for [them] as well. We can use that land to help other people."
That's unlikely to happen, according to Seattle City Council Member Sally Bagshaw, who chairs the council's Parks and Seattle Center committee. Bagshaw will head the discussion on whether or not to give MOHAI the $7 million at the next parks committee meeting on the 16. Full council is expected to vote on the issue on September 20.
The mayor also tackles the city's growing budget deficit, the shooting death of John T. Williams, why road diets work, and more. Check it out:
