For a few hours today DADT was dead—but the Obama administration went to court today and asked the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to grant an "emergency request" for a temporary stay of a lower court judge's ruling scrapping DADT. And the emergency stay was granted and so, once again, it is illegal for gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. Gee, wake me when the fierce advocacy starts—the fierce advocacy for gay rights, not against 'em.

And before trolls start spouting off about how Obama has no choice but to defend DADT in court, please go and read this.

GetEQUAL and Washington Activists to Protest President Obama and Sen. Murray TOMORROW

President Obama Files Immediate Injunction to Continue DADT: Activists Respond to Lack of Courage and Leadership

SEATTLE, WA • Tomorrow, GetEQUAL—a direct action lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization—and local LGBT activists are set to protest the Seattle visit of President Obama and Senator Murray over their lack of leadership and courage for Full Federal Equality for LGBT Americans. On Tuesday, October 12, Judge Virginia Phillips issued a ruling finding the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy unconstitutional, ordering all discharges stopped worldwide. One week later, on Wednesday, October 20, President Obama instructed his Department of Justice to file an immediate injunction with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to prevent the ruling from being implemented. Though, to date, no disruption to military readiness or effectiveness has been reported while the Pentagon cautiously allowed gay and lesbian service members to serve openly over the past week, the Appeals Court issued a stay on the Judge's order, activating DADT once again. GetEQUAL and local activists will hold banners demanding the President show courage and leadership by immediately ending "Don't Ask Don't Tell."

GetEQUAL continues to hold the president accountable to his promises and will keep the President's feet to the fire, as he requested, at every turn until we get equal.

The protest goes down tomorrow—Thursday, October 21, 2010—from 10 AM to 12:30 PM in the plaza just outside the the University of Washington Hec Edmundson Pavilion. I'm stuck in Indiana so I'll have to be there in spirit.
