Gaijin prostitute? How offensive.
2
Didn't look gaijin to me.

Funny how you can be all for gay rights, but still find images of guys kissing gross... blech. This must be biological.
3
Now that's an HIV prevention ad I can get behind!
4
That..was....awesome...
5
The only version of Little Drummer Boy I could bear to hear more than once.
6
so hot! that little drummer song will never be the same. lol...
7
Now it feels like Christmas is on the way - excellent use of mistletoe.
8
Oh the Japanese. I love them. It was a cool and funky ad with a version of Little Drummer Boy I can learn to love. And what about that condom fairy's crown?
9
Is this an actual commercial or a PSA? Unfortunately we would never see anything like this here in the states unless it was a youtube sensation that was passed around and viewed millions of times. Like IGBP videos.

Dan, I know you've been really busy already this year and probably have a full plate but the time is right for you to think about another project. Everyone is listening to and watching you right now and the word would spread quickly. Seriously, you should consider starting your own HIV prevention campaign. You have the contacts, the audience and you would have lots of help just for the asking.

Just sayin'.

P.S. Mars...Japan....and the director's from Los Angeles: Bryan Jackson:

Well, that was awesome in the typical WTF Japanese way. Japan really is the weirdest place on Earth.

Taiko dude was pretty hot, too.
12
Arrghh! Yet another video I have to wait till I get home for... o.O

Y'all are such teases...
13
Hot.

Now I'm going to get a little grin on my face every time I hear "Little Drummer Boy" over the Muzak at work. Finally some cheer for the season.

@BEG You should definitely watch the visuals. The lyrics are very stylized and basically just a retooling of the song--something along the lines of:

Come they told me (par-um-pa-pa-pum)
But never ever in my bum-ba-bum-bum
It's so much safer to come in a condom
Or let's just masturbate
It can be fun
You can still come
On my tum-tum

(yeah, it looks kinda cheesy when you write it out that way, doesn't it?)

One of the previous posters is 100% right. DAN -- You have the audience, the means, and the common sense that the mainstream aids orgs lack! You could make a big difference with your own HIV prevention on youtube, like IGB. I know it could be a shit ton of work, but it's something sorely needed.

DAN -- "despicable me" is absolutely right. You have the media contacts and audience and the common sense that the aids orgs lack -- your own project on this issue, like IGB, could make a big difference in changing the complacency and dialogue on the HIV epidemic among young gay men.

I know it could be a ton of work and you would get shit from many quarters... but this is something that's really needed. Please think about it!!

We also need someone who is going to give us true and accurate facts about this disease. Someone who knows the truth and won't bullshit us, unlike the vitriol the anti-gay bigots are trying to shove down people's throats. You have the contacts, the knowledge, you were out there when this epidemic started and know how quickly it spread, how frightening it is/was and how impossibly misleading most of the press is/was about the disease. You have friends and friends of friends who are living with and maybe, sadly dying of this disease.

Please, please just take a couple of minutes and seriously consider this Dan. Just see where it leads you.

I LOVE this. No fear mongering, no making sex a dangerous and dirty thing. Just a fabulous Santa-like drag queen dropping some fabulous bling condoms into sexy situations. Like it only adds to the hotness of the whole thing. I seriously love this.

What's funny is that they won't usually let same-sex couples into love hotels, according to the program director that talked to us when I was studying abroad. (He was an American in Japan, and the question naturally arose with me in the room.) They also won't sell rooms to single people, I think he said. Maybe it depends on the area...? I was a bit out in the inaka, so to speak. (Think of it as the boonies, I guess?)
19
@17, I'm with you. Far from being alien-ish, this was so warmly human. Those men were depicted so clearly as absolutely delighting in each other - way better than 90% of any porn ever.
20
I get the sense that this wasn't made for a Japanese audience per se, and even if it was, I doubt it would gain much traction. Perhaps one for the Japan-fanboys in the US? The general Japanese audience wouldn't be able to understand the lyrics. In the credits, Japanese names are the minority, and even most of the Japanese-looking actors bear non-Japanese names.

That said, @18, they do say in the titles that it is set in Shinjuku's Nichome, which is probably Japan's most (in)famous gay cruising district.
22
@18 Have you ever been to a love hotel? There's zero interaction with anyone. You could take a goat if you wanted. A lot of them have rooms connected directly to indoor parking spaces so you don't even have to worry about running into other guests.
23
omg. how/where can I get one of those rhinestone condoms.
24
@20 I've never been there, so I don't know what it's like. And I didn't read up on it, since I knew I wouldn't be in Tokyo much at all. Thank you for the information!

@22 Yes, actually. I frequented this one, as a matter of fact: http://hotel-wiz-sweet.com/ It was an awkwardly shaped, orange building right the train station. Quite a few stops from my school and my host family, so I don't mind sharing it. There's an old woman who sits behind the counter--on a day when my boyfriend forgot his umbrella and it was pouring, she gave us a free one. We went quite a few times--my libido is too high to handle an entire semester without any physical contact at all. We'd press the button by the room of our choice (some went for as little as 3000 yen!) and then we'd get the receipt and stuff from the old woman. She was nice, actually.

However, I think I was guilty of generalizing my own experiences in this case. I have heard of the fancier, automated love hotels. I've just never been to one. I just know that they would've stopped me if I'd brought along a third person or if I'd gone with a girl--that's what I was told by the coordinator. He told us in the context of "what to do if you miss the last train" and we never missed our last train, so it never came up...

Sorry to assume that all love hotels were like the Wiz!

This...makes sense. In Japan, Christmas is a secular holiday. It has developed into something very different from American Christmas.

It is popular with couples, giving gifts to each other, going out to parties and shows together, like Valentines Day.

The Christmas fairy bringing condoms so that people can enjoy each other freely and joyfully - this ad is somewhat romantic.
Nice to see same-sex couples depicted in this way.
