Um we have a McKeldin Masturbator. McKeldin is our library and there was a creepy guy who would sneak up on girls studying late at night and masturbate in front and at times come on them.
Former Terp here! I graduated in 2003. Terp is short for Terrapin or Turtle. Fear the Turtle is an awesome rallying cry, don't you think? I'm unaware of current sex scandals or fetishes. The major scandals are mostly about how the PG County police beat students for no reason. It was within the context of sports riot, but these kids weren't damaging property or anything. The Feds got involved. Still waiting on the resolution of that. Will you talk be open to the general public or former alums?

did you hear about their public and contentious screening of Pirates II? It got the attention of a state legislator who threatened to cut the school's funding. contact malcolmpharris@gmail.com, one of the SDS organizers who made it happen.
Will this video be uploaded somewhere? I know you hate linking to videos of yourself, but can you link to this one when it goes up (assuming it's uploaded somewhere other than slog)?
There was the campus cuddler...my former roommate was concerned about this guy and insisted on locking our door every night even though there haven't been any recent reports that I know about.
Then there was the guy who was groping people in Stamp (our student union). Some graduate student, I think?
Oh, right, scandals. Nothing happens in January around here, but most recently:
1. Some PG County officials were indicted for various naughties. Namely: County executive Jack Johnson was found to be accepting a ton of bribes and contacted his wife to tell her to hide money in her underwear before they bought got caught. Also, a bunch of police officers were arrested for helping to traffic bootleg cigs and alcohol... oh, and COCAINE. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010…
2. The Thirsty Turtle, a local bar popular with the undergrads, (I'm a grad student, fwiw) was closed down late last year after it became apparent that it was getting a little too popular with the high school students too.
3. At a video game shop in College Park, a guy high on PCP playing Guitar Hero flew into a rage, trashed the store, and had to be tased into submission. Maybe this one isn't so scandalous... I guess I just found the Diamondback article funny. The video is online, but of course they cut out the part where the guy flips out. http://www.diamondbackonline.com/news/un…
In addition to what @8 said, the mascot of UMD is a Diamondback Terrapin (the state reptile) called Testudo. Heh.
I was teaching human anatomy for non-majors right around the time Dan came to visit UMD last, and several of my students went. This is great important when you teach students whose required course are badminton and golf, and who frequently mistake MAJOR body parts for each other, like the uterus for the bladder, the clitoris for the urethra, etc. etc. I was psyched they were interested in learning about healthy sexuality and it made for some good convos (I study arachnid genitalia, I have some practice with this) when we discussed reproductive anatomy later in the course! Looking forward to hearing the Q&A again!

Damn I won't be able to attend as I have class, but I have a link to a Time article about the controversy surrounding the showing of Pirates on campus. At the time, it was a pretty big deal.

Dan: I dutifully downloaded podcast 222 last night, but I'm sorry to report that I have not yet listened to it! Now I see there is a 222A; I hope this is not my doing. But tell me: which one should I listen to? Waiting for instructions.
While I think the Today show is, in general, the equivalent of chocolate cake for the morbidly obese, Jamie Gangel's piece - several years ago - on UM's Sexuality course was funny & interesting.
sorry, I don't live on campus, so I lack dirt to share. except our LGBT Equity office is stuck in the basement next to the ROTC guys and we have a really awesome transman teaching our LGBT courses
I'd love to attend. Is it open to non students? I'd like to discuss a paid speaking gig and podcast sponsorship for FetFest with Dan too while he's in my area if possible. Paul. pickpaul@gmail.com
I'd love to come if possible as a non UMD student, is that possible? I'd also like to meet Dan while he's in town to discuss a paid speaking engagement and podcast sponsorship for FetFest. Thanks, Paul. pickpaul@gmail.com
2010 Alum here! One of the really striking things about UMD is its awesome diversity. Every possible variety of person is represented on campus. Maybe you could address touchy aspects of multicultural sexual culture that a lot of the student body can relate to on some level. I'm thinking along the lines of dating outside one's religion/culture, the unique challenges of being LGBTQ and a minority, etc.
Also, as someone mentioned already, the LGBT office is in a dark basement and has relatively limited hours due to budget woes. If you could highlight their cause it would mean so much.
You should stop by the National Archives at College Park. The building is located on land owned by the University of Maryland, right next to the golf course. I work in the motion picture film lab at NARA and we're always coming across interesting items. We hold the "Sex Hygiene" film directed by John Ford for the Army during WWII (notorious in our break room for its bad advice) and many other gems that contain lines such as, "Has anyone ever told you, Tony, that you have syphilis?"
Dan, please get back to us on the non-student attendance thing. I'll do what I can to find the answer, but you would be the authority. :) If so, I'll be there, despite it being a jam-packed week. Also...more than one week's notice in the future, please?
And...you're lurking? Coming to DC, too? I'll be on the spy for you on the streets. We have numerous lovely drinking establishments you could visit in the city. ;)
Holy crap, it just so happens that I'm flying into DC that day and I was looking for plans in the evening! That couldn't possibly have been better timing!
(If this is for students only, I'm gonna be pissed (or sneak in) :D)
To clarify on the Thirsty Turtle deal: Four people were stabbed in a barfight, three of them were underage students. The owners eventually just gave up on the legal battle and closed the place.
There are supposedly some places on campus popular for anonymous gay hookups: the men's bathroom in the Armory and the bathroom in the basement of Tawes. I think Tawes is being remodeled so not sure about that anymore.
Also, I heard that the roof of the math building is accessible and couples like to go up there to have sex.
I might be able to confirm that second bit, @43. My office window overlooks the math building and when the weather was warmer I definitely saw some suspicious stuff, kids and sketchy facilities employees alike.
A student at UMD was caught going into dorms at George Washington University and just standing in girls rooms while they were asleep. (So girls would wake up to a stranger in the middle of their room, watching them sleep.) I heard that they would always scream and he'd run, but the scandal is that he didn't get kicked out of UMD after being caught. In his student judicial hearings, he claimed that since these were not UMD students it was irrelevant and that he technically couldn't be kicked out. He was very rich and hired lawyers for a school judicial hearing. (The perpetrators roommate told me about all of this.)
Big Fan!

Dan, I am so excited to hear to speak live! Huge fan of the podcast...wish I were brave enough to air my dirty secrets...
