In Charles' post on "Axing the Middle Class," I was particularly struck by the quote he pulled from CNN, in which Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey tells a conservative conference, apparently without any intended irony:
"I'm attacking the leadership of the union because they're greedy, and they're selfish and they're self-interested..."
Greed, selfishness, and self-interest, huh. Um... isn't that exactly what we celebrate about Wall Street? Aren't the profit motive and rational self-interest two of the engines that allegedly drive a capitalist economic system, sparking innovation, productivity and wealth creation? Didn't right-wing icon Ayn Rand actually pen a book titled The Virtue of Selfishness?
So how is it that we nurture self-interest in one class, while condemning it in another?
Because we are a nation of fucking hypocrites, that's how.
