I think the term you were looking for in your headline, instead of "lame," was "super awesome."
2
Anti-gay, anti-poor, anti-labor, anti-family, anti-progress... I can't say he's told us things he likes aside from worshiping Jesus.

Does he like ice cream, ponies and cupcakes? If not, he's the most evil man in the world!
3
So many of these "Christian Leaders" espouse a God who is just a jerk: Why would anyone want to spend eternity tiptoeing around some moody old meglomaniac? Not to mention his son who, in their version, apparently has anger-control issues and a daddy complex?
4
But Jeebus loves poor people. Without them, there wouldn't be any Christians.
5
I'm smarter than Jesus (assuming he existed).

"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself." -Matthew 6:34

Now that there is just fucking retarded.
6
Whenever he sends out an email or posts an article I can't help but think it's material for "Shit My Dad Says"
7
Given that Jesus grew up two thousand years ago in a Roman marginalized state that didn't have a fraction of the quality of education and scientific breakthroughs we now enjoy, well, yes, I think we're all smarter than Jesus Christ.

If this guy was asking a real question, he would have switched out smarter for wiser.
8
@5, i like KJV better: sufficient unto the day is the evil therein.

Hutch is a TERRIBLE Christian. He has no idea what he's talking about. That's a profoundly ignorant and incorrect reading of Jesus's teachings on the subject of the poor. Jesus wanted everybody to give up their worldly goods; how's that working out for you, Hutchie? What car you drivin' these days?
10
Isolating bible passages out of context is the most ridiculous thing ever... This book is supposed to be the literal word of god, but somehow huge sections of that word can be ignored to make whatever point the reader is trying to prove...

That "the poor will always be with you" bit comes from a section where the disciples were bitching about some lady "wasting" perfume by pouring it on Jesus's head, instead of selling the perfume and giving the money to the poor. Jesus told them to back off, and told them that they could help the poor anytime (since they'll always be around), but he himself won't always be around, so they should waste a little perfume on him.

Egomania?

How do people worship this person?!?!?!
11
Huh. My Bible says:

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

In other words, just the opposite of what Hutch says. Give to the poor, then follow Jesus.

Maybe he got a discount Bible that doesn't include Matthew 19:21.
12
Smarter than JC? Maybe. Wiser than JC? Probably not.

@5: Are you sure that's not a Mudede quote?
13
@ 11, so by combining the two ideas, I conclude that we'll never be rid of the poor because we're all supposed to make ourselves poor to help the poor, and then the newly-rich formerly-poor people need to make themselves poor to help me.
14
Isn't there something in the Constitution about how it's expressly forbidden for candidates to be required to declare their religious beliefs/non beliefs? They're not even really supposed to be asked what their beliefs are.
15
@14: Article VI.

"[N]o religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."
16
Has anyone over at Thee ol Stranger ever thought about not covering this sort of nonsense? It is totally irrelevant to everyone but a small minority of nutcases. Great blog but please think about not giving this crap the audience it so desperately wants. Thanks
17
Always and forever backward. Cognitive incontinence. What a dick.
18
Aw, c'mon, guys. Hutch *has* to denigrate the poor. Otherwise, people might think he's a commie or something.
19
@15,
Thanks! (I was half expecting someone to post a lmgtfy link)
20
For a pastor he's unbelievably ignorant of what the bible says!

Admittedly, he's citing one of the most commonly misunderstood quotes the bible offers, but as Iblah (@10) correctly notes, the Sandaled One did not say "We will never be able to eliminate the problem of the poor" at all. What he said was more along the lines of: Quit using 'I could be helping the poor' as your excuse for not treating the people right in front of you like they're special and valuable.

He's saying, "You can help out poor people any day of the week -- and should -- but don't fuckin' use that as a reason to neglect the person staring you in the face, right this instant, ya' royal douchebag!"(Mark 14:7, The Prof Tim translation)

In fact, if Hutch knew anything about the bible, he'd know the wording used here is very specific and references this Torah/Old Testament passage:

"There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land." (Deuteronomy 15:11)
21
@14,15- But that doesn't prohibit voters from having a religious test for who they vote for. It just means that it can't be written into the law that Supreme Court Judges be Catholic or Jewish, or Tennessee representatives Born Again Christian.
22
Timrr brilliant and colorful translation!

And, Hutch once again reflects that his god is his fame and money, in my opinion. *shakes head*
23
And, Outercow @5, that verse is better translated this way.

Wow, you're so overwhelmed by your life situation that you need to take a deep breath and focus on one thing you must accomplish today and forget tomorrow for a moment. Let tomorrow worry about itself, because today you're headed for a nervous breakdown.

Sorry, I can't word it as colorfully as Timrr.
24
@23 I don't agree, Kim. Sure your interpretation reads much saner, but that's what happens when you purposefully go out searching for sanity in scripture. I don't have that bias. And knowing these words come from a cult that has preached the second coming of christ is gonna be any day now, everyday for the past 2,000 years and that as long as you've found Jesus you can die at any time w/ no downside, doesn’t lead me to believe the Bible has a real strong “plan ahead” message. It's an apocalypse cult, always has been, and it makes a lot more sense to read that passage as "don't worry about the future, Yahweh's got it," than "it's time for a mental health break."
25
@21,
Oh, no doubt about that Dwight.
It just strikes me as another annoying and hypocritical aspect of particular Americans who go so far as to suggest people shouldn't be allowed to vote unless they pass some basic test on the functions of the government or the meaning of the Constitution, yet they themselves fail to comprehend the functions of the gov and the constitution on a regular basis.
26
Wow, Outercow, I'd say that you have your own bias, but you may disagree. And, please notice that I never said anything about truth or that it should be received as instructional. I only provided a modern worded and rather accurate translation of what was composed after 70 CE. Hopefully, your "endless atheist rage" has been satisfied for the day? I regret troubling you, but I'm glad if I helped. You wouldn't want to keep things too pent up, release is good. ;)

Take care.

In Matthew 6:34 Jesus has turned his discourse from the general crowd and is addressing the diciples/Apostles.
They have a calling requiring greater devotion and sacrifice than the average believer; they are to go unto the world at possible peril and probable discomfort to witness. They are not to concern themselves with lodging or food, those things will be provided.

Please wait...
