I guess they had to get the jump on Arizona, eh? The Axis of Dumbassery; Florida, Arizona and Utah.
2
An M1911? Really Mormons? Looks like you're trying REALLY hard to convince us of something... This is a better gun for Mormons.

Speaking of Utah, has Slog touched on the new immigration bill? I haven't noticed any posts on it.

@3 Thanks for the link. The Utah approach to immigration is preternaturally sane. Did politicians really do that? Republican politicians yet! Good for them

The Washington State Gun should be one of those Nerf gattling guns that nerds insist on having in their offices despite the fact they annoy just about everyone over the age of 10.

A. At first glance I thought it said "Utah state gum". I've gotta get these eyes checked

B. I used to have an "Expert" marksmanship medal for that particular model firearm back when I was in the Army. I probably couldn't hit the broad side of a barn now. (See "A", above).
7
Good thing you didn't make a Mormon reference, Goldy, cause then you'd be insensitive and a blasphemer.
8
Paul @6, I'll bet you could hit the broad side of a barn with it, even today. Because, if you qualified as "expert," you know the trick is in how you hold the gun. And, like riding a bicycle, that's something you don't forget.

Cute.

I'd vote for the Winchester 1897 pump shotgun. I love the way pieces come popping out all over it when you work the action, especially the bolt that gouges the crap out of your thumb knuckle if you're not careful.

Not likely to be a popular choice, but I inherited one from my great-uncle long ago, so I have a soft spot for it.

Arizona is close behind with a pending bill that would make the Colt single action army revolver the state firearm. If passed, the statute would be codified on the books right after the section that names the state butterfly, which I think is a nice juxtaposition. @1 I'd be very much interested to see examples of state legislatures that are not proficient purveyors of "dumbassery." To AZ's credit, just yesterday five get-tough on immigration bills were rejected by the Republican controlled Senate. This after an open letter from dozens of local business leaders encouraging the state to back off and let the Feds handle immigration.

By the time I got into the Army, the M1911 had been replaced by the M9 and I never got to qualify with that (M16, M4, M249 and M203 was all I ever got to play with. Biggest regret? Never firing a Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher...yee haw!)

But Browning was a hell of a designer though and from Utah IIRC so if you gotta have a state weapon, it's not a bad choice.
12
As far as a choice, I can't think of a more classic and recognizable choice that is appropriate for Utah other than a 1911.

As far as state anythings, I don't really care. State songs, birds, flowers, beans whatever, who cares. If you're going to be upset about a society saturated with guns, there are things that actually have significance. An official state firearm is not, IMO, significant to anybody.
13
What? No props for the sidearm that built the state during the mountain meadows massacre? Way to rewrite and ignore history yet again Utah.
14
cool.

hey, does Washington have an official Bong?
Official Dildo?
Official State Variety of MaryJane?

whythefucknot?
15
John Browning (who invented the gun) was born in Utah, seems a justifiable reason to pick that gun.

Does anyone know if any Washingtonians have invented a gun worth bragging about?
16
I think it should be a standard shotgun, but one with like 20 barrels on it, so there'd be one for each wife during a shotgun wedding.

@16: Well played, sir. Well played.

The honeybee thing and the whole concept of the community as a hive is HUGE in Mormon culture. They even have a word for it: deseret (That's where the Utah newspaper, Deseret News, got their name). They even wanted to name the state "Deseret", but since it refers to a religious concept, the US gov't said no, try again.

Just more evidence that those folks are SERIOUSLY cultish.

Please wait...
