They can be as idiotically nostalgic for a revised history as they please, since they would never have to deal with the actual situation of the Confederacy (a.k.a. White Mexico) successfully seceding (did I spell that right?).

The same goes for their stances on abortion. They don't really believe that abortion will ever be truly outlawed, so they can be as extreme as they want. That doesn't mean they won't say nasty things or make it hard for non-white non-rich non-males to get good reproductive health care.

I wonder what would have happened if, say, Rome had lost it's slaves because of a successful uprising. Would it have sparked an industrial revolution or would people be bitter and resentful for hundreds of years?

The North should never have fought the war. The southern states were, and remain, a liability to the US. Under educated, underdeveloped, and a constant threat to freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The North should have left them to figure out hook-worm for themselves, and pay the costs of ending slavery on their own.

Karl, the US had to fight the war to maintain the Union. Allowing the secession of the Confederacy would have meant two nations competing for the same expansion to the west, which would have ended in war anyway. And from the standpoint of the Americans who were slaves (including a majority of all people in some states), the continuation of the Confederacy would have meant their continued slavery, and an expansion of the slave system to more territory (like most of what became the US Southwest and California, and the remains of Mexico, and depending upon the outcome of future wars with the US, maybe even Oregon (and thus what is now Washington). How is that better than what happened?

In any case, the Confederacy started the war so it's hard to blame the United States for fighting back to defend its property and territory against a bunch of violent insurgents, not to mention protecting the many US loyalists in the South who did not support the Confederacy. When it gets down to it when you consider the whole population of the Confederate states those who supported secession even then were probably a minority.
