I don't care at this point. I want the political conversation in this country to deal with the actual, numerous problems going on in this country and the globe. I'm also sure the Hawaiian government has better things to do than field phone calls, e-mails and other requests from these idiots, to boot.

The birthers are now engaged in a carnival side-show of epic proportions as they fall all over each other to come up with even more insane rationalizations/justifications for their racially-fueled "conspiracy" that Obama isn't a U.S. citizen. And each of these even more picayune hair-splittings only serves to drive away ever increasing numbers of fence-sitters: people who may have had vague concerns, but weren't totally convinced by the "evidence of a cover-up", as they watch teh crazy get turned up to 11.

Plus, it has the added bonus of making Trump look like an even bigger idiot than he does already, which is not only good in-and-of itself, but also gives all the other GOP presidential hopefuls an opportunity to jump into the race, as The Donald goes on the defensive/pulls even crazier bullshit out of his ass in order to try to keep his pasty mug in front of everybody else's when the cameras are on. Expect a whole passel of GOPers to jump into the ring any time now, which will simply further fragment the base and make it all that more difficult for Trump to maintain his early front-runner status.

Wikileaks just released the long form birth certificates for Trump's wives and mistresses and they were all born in Communist countries, have active "party" memberships and show up as active KGB agents.

Obama should be doing everything he can to get Trump to be the GOP front runner then pull this stuff out. He should be ignoring these people until he has a real opponent. Right now he's playing to an inconsequential, media hungry hor.

I disagree @16: if anything Obama should be doing everything he can to make Trump FIGHT to maintain his current front-runner position. The more GOP hopefuls who sense an opportunity to knock him out of that position, the more will enter the race, and the more fragmented the GOP base will become over time.

This is a long-game strategy: we've still got 18 months until the 2012 election, so IMO it's better to keep them fighting amongst themselves for as long as possible, if only so teh GOP crazy all has that much more time to stay in front of the public eye.

This is a pretty clever political move and we likely won't see the full results for a while, as with most of his more clever moves. I don't know that I agree with the timing, I think he should have held out until a little closer to the election, but I've said that before about his moves and he generally proves me wrong.

Definitely a good move, regardless of timing. Yes, the hard core birthers will be stuck on this for years to come (hopefully) but he's just cemented them firmly in crazy territory as far as anyone else is concerned. In one fell swoop he gets to prove he's a citizen (for those who were unconvinced), prove the birthers are insane (for those who were unconvinced), make virtually all of the Republican candidates look stupid (most of them have expressed skepticism at least about his citizenship), and possibly best of all he gets to call them all silly carnival sideshows in a news conference while at the same time looking like the civil adult. Well played. You'll see.
