Someone I know who lives in Vancouver wrote a blog post about a year ago about walking on a beautiful spring day with his partner (not married, but they've been together for almost 20 years) and a car filled with teenage girls pulled up and yelled "faggots" at them, and he wrote about how hard it was for him, even at the age of 50. It brought back his high school insecurities in a second, and he went from having a great day to feeling embarrassed and awful, and then was angry with himself for having those feelings! It actually led to him changing the whole focus of his blog to dealing with issues of self-esteem for gay men. And those girls who yelled at him? Probably didn't give it a second thought.

I work with a woman who's 43, and she routinely refers to things she doesn't like as "gay." I correct her every time, and the response I get is, "You know I don't mean it that way," or, "You can't tell me what to say!" or "I know! I shouldn't say it [eye roll]".....people just don't get it. They have no idea how a single word will affect someone.

Hey, I got call faggot too yesterday. Shame there's no way to prove it.

Didn't we take that one back like 20 years ago?

@3 That was before the Internet. You still need to post a picture with a Mission Accomplished banner behind you.

How was your weekend, Danny?

Did you know that thousands of Americans lived polygamy.
Then the Federal government passed laws making it illegal.
Men were taken from thair families and locked up.
Their property seized.
Many fled to Mexico or Canada.
This was over a hundred years ago.

It seems some folks have been waging the "marriage equality" struggle for a lot longer than a decade.
And paid a high price.

Do you feel sympathy for polygamists hounded by law enforcemet, Danny?

Should people be locked up for marrying the ones they love?

What if after Prop 8 passed in California everyone who had previously entered into a homosexual marriage had been rounded up, arested and imprisoned?
We bet that would have really made your blood boil.

Do you feel any empathy for polygamists hounded by law enforcement, Danny?

Do you see any moral difference between polygamy and homosexual marriage?
Adults should be able to marry any other adults that want to marry them, don't you think?
Isn't that what you think?

You've long advocated against making harmless behavior illegal.
Driving harmless behaviors underground creates way more problems than the outlawed behavior.
Isn't that what you say?
Marijuana.
Prostitution.
Stupid unjust laws.
Bad public policy.
Making criminals out of decent people.

Danny, do you support legalizing polygamy between consenting adults?

I think period troll is Richard Lee. it's certainly his style.

@6 At least we know it's not Viggo... :)

I personally find it entertaining that he thinks that the always-multiple-wives model of Mormon polygamyin the 1800s must have been pure, refreshing love, not abuse orchestrated by men with power. Women were just lining up for the opportunity in their early teens or before, doncha know, and unlike men they only love one mate. Just like in sexism free, egalitarian, progressive Islamic countries in the middle east and africa.

I can't figure out what's up with that either. Whether these people are terminally stupid (well I suppose that's kind of a given) or whether they maybe think calling a lesbian an faggot is more insulting than calling her a dyke? I think I'm about as WTF over that as she is.

Only thing is, I'm sure the ppl calling her names are *also* calling names to high school kids or others less able to "take it." It never seems to be an either or thing :(

Now Now-
don't be churlish;
This is 2011 after all;
Polygamy would allow gals and guys to have multiple spouses.

feel better?

@10 in 2011, there are still 14 year old girls being forced to become the 23rd wife of random prophet #7. There are a LOT of disturbing, controlling behaviors intertwined with polygamy at the moment.

interesting, i have never thought of faggot as a gendered term...for me it has always been a death-threat when used as a slur or when used within the in-group as a reminder that for over 1,000 years they burned us [deviants: philosophical, political, religious and/or sexual] in England and Europe like bundles of sticks...and as many women were burned as men if not more...
13
This reminds me of a Brian Posehn bit where he's talking about shouting confused slurs at people, like telling White gay men to go back to Mexico.

@11 - That's already illegal. Personally, in 2011, I don't see any reason why there should be limits on the number of consenting adults who should be allowed to marry each other, except maybe the amount of space you have/money you're willing to spend on the wedding. Pedos are going to round up child brides no matter what society says, and regular marriages require you to prove neither of you are 14, so there's no problem, right?
15
Except maybe in states where spousal privilege is a thing. Can you imagine, all the mob guys get married so none of them have to testify? But heterosexuals also get married to keep from testifying (if Law and Order tells it right), so that seems like a silly rule anyway.

That kind of abuse exists because polygamists are forced underground.
Make it legal and out in the open and regulated and those girls will have some protection..

Didn't you read Dan's post on how legalizing prostitution would protect underage girls?

Please wait...
