I'm not pro tunnel or anti tunnel. I'm just pro-shutting the fuck up about the tunnel already. It's like Seattle is my home and mom and dad are arguing about what to do with the patio in the back yard. It's not that I don't think it's important - I just want to hide under my bed every time you guys yell about it.
It's not about a patio. It's more like having a severe affliction of malignant traffic and your crazy parents are getting ready to take out second and third mortgages so they can pay billions of dollars for some stupid-ass snake oil made from apricot pits.
I'll have you know that silencing the opposition is a time-honored tactic when you're trying to pull off something that the public would never let you get away with if they actually knew what you were up to.
Does the local NPR actually offer a counter point to the anti-tunnel folks? If they dont, thats seems odd. Normally NPR offers a standard point/counter point in a calm and rational manner.
I hate the phrase "panties in a twist," not just because the word "panties" is stupid but because it's really just another woman-dissing phrase like "cried like a little girl."
@11 really, NPR should have a reasoned viewpoint of all the sides.
There should be a pro-tunnel guy.
There should be a pro-Viaduct guy (not the crazy ones, just someone who wants a rebuilt Viaduct, like say Suzy Burke).
There should be a pro-surface-transit guy (or Carey Moon).
And there should be a just-tear-it-down guy.
Those are the real positions. The artificial Yes/No arises due to the ballot choices. Admittedly, only the pro-tunnel guy would be for Yes, and all the other three positions would be for No.
I'm with #3. I just wish everyone would stop bitching about it but I'd like to point out that as hard as they are fighting to get you kicked off the show, they must be afraid that you are winning too many arguments.
Oh, come on...SLOG/The Strager is the A-1 mouth organ for the whole density crowd and the tunnel is the ne plus ultra of their designs.
They basically want to force everyone and everything into Seattle at a very high price and at the same time make everyone in the state pay for it (and also be the principle owners of just about every square foot of the densified earth).
Heads-up Dominic, it's sometimes possible to reverse-engineer text that's been blurred like that, especially if the font is known, like with the MICR font used for routing and account numbers on checks. You're better off blacking it out entirely.
This is a violation of Fox News' rules for reporters. They just fired a guy for making campaign donations. And MSNBC fired that guy. Olberman? For giving to Democrats. Look it up. These are facts.
Dominic Holden and Eli Sanders are FIRED from Fox News. There. Happy now?
If The Stanger is going to act as a 501c(4) and appear on a publicly funded radio station then you have to disclose your material support.
All Eli has to do is disclose on air, before he speaks on the subject. This isn't all that tough to figure out. There is a reason for Steve Scher to say that he can't advocate. There is a reason guests must disclose.
Give all the money you want, live it up, but on publicly paid radio you really do have to disclose.
You really nail it at the end. The pro-tunnel campaign has been about bullying people into silence all the way through. And it works. They've made the fight so toxic that people either A.) won't touch it, or B.) just want it to end. That's a shitty tactic, and getting away with it will just encourage them next time. That's how bullies are.
@23, I am offering advice based on what I learned at the University of Washington, I Majored in Communication, my focus was Technology and Society (you're soaking in it). Go Huskies!
It is unfortunate that the J-school kids spend precious little time actually studying media, and more banking credits writing glorified blog posts.
In this instance, a Journalist doesn't have a problem of not seeing the forest for the trees, they ARE the trees.
They say they are doing nothing wrong because they said so, and they don't understand conflicting information. Well, no check or balance there.
When the Washington Policy Center sends out its crappy "news letter" just because it has the word "news" in it doesn't make them Journalists. At some point, the reverse is true, too. You can keep calling yourself a newspaper, but at some point advocating in the form of cash donations and public lobbying stops being "Journalism". The Stranger employees, when on a publicly funded radio station should make an effort to disclose, not for their sake, but for the non-profit public radio station.
Looking at KUOW, do they knowingly invite people on as journalists advocating that are in fact lobbyists? It's not that big of a leap, see the $100 check.
The answer is probably no, but (one more time) disclosing The Stranger's relationship when they go on the air really would help resolve the position the Stranger is gleefully putting KUOW in.
The Stranger can advocate, KUOW can not (directly, or indirectly by failing to disclose that its invited guests are behaving as lobbyists).
Is Frye blowing this hair splitting, he has every right to do, by the actions of the Stranger wayyyyyyy out of proportion for his (fully disclosed) gain, yep. Is Dominic perpetuating Frye's ability to do that by acting like a jackass? Yep.
MrBaker, @22, you conveniently fail to mention Dominic's rebuttal in the comments of your link here -- and your own bullshit response to it "I'm unconvinced." Why don't you tell us *why* you're unconvinced in a way that addresses the actual facts in a truthful manner. Otherwise I don't trust you for a second.
Eli is so awesome for being able to sit in a room and just talk to these people.... as a former stranger photo dork who got to watch him in action hearing him today calling this out was straight up awesome.. all I say is it's worth whatever it takes to make sure this smart guy has a job pushing the buttons he pushes..
Fox news, at least, has some standards. Alex is a "fucker" and Conlin an "asshole" according to Dom in previous posts; take exception to what he purports to report (from the anti-tunnel side which he supports financially) and you have a solid basis to suspect everything he writes lacks any credibility. A factually supported and fairly reported account would benefit the Strangers' readers, but what they are getting are the rantings of an advocate. Don't confuse what Dom writes with journalism or even point-of-view commentary. It has now collapsed into snarky name-calling by an editor out of control. And I OPPOSE the tunnel!
Will someone please rewrite the copy for the Protect Seattle Now campaign page? It's suck a lackluster statement I'm amazed they're able to collect ANY donations or momentum.
@28, I posted the link here before Dominic replied to it at Publicola (see that I posted there before Dominic did).
I remain unconvinced because I believe the email referenced in the Publicola post, "PubliCola got a copy of an email the city attorney’s public records officer, Naomi Hillyard, sent to Holden on April 19", more than I believe what Dominic Holden did with it. His actions following it, including the $100 check, do not help his argument.
In both cases the timeline works against him.
I remain unconvinced.
Why are they so against the public?
Otherwise, Dom, I'm going to assume that you are, for the second time today, making shit up.

It's the second sentence in the post. Your comment makes it seem like you know what the post was about... but you didn't read the second sentence?

That's unfortunate, the actual facts should be enough to support an argument, Dominic.
Now I am starting to feel sorry for you.
Fun times.

My analysis is: Frye is a troll, Dominic is an idiot, they deserve each other, as long as KUOW doesn't get hurt in the process.
