Jamaican doctors assert that those trying to replicate the powerful moves of daggering in the bedroom can end up with dramatic injuries: they say the incidents of broken penises have increased in the past year; according to an article in the Jamaican Star.
@6 yowch! I had not heard of "broken penises", so found this interview with the urology chair from our own UW School of Medicine:
What exactly is broken penis syndrome?
It's what we call penile fracture. It is a severe form of bending injury to the erect penis that occurs when a membrane called the tunica albuginea tears. The tunica albuginea surrounds the corpora cavernosa, specialized spongy tissue in the core of the penis that fills up with blood during an erection. When the tunica albuginea tears, the blood that is normally confined to this space leaks out into other tissues. You get bruising and swelling.
What are the signs of penile fracture?
Usually there will be a popping sound. If someone has severe pain (in the penis), especially associated with bruising, swelling and loss of erection, he should seek emergency care.
How exactly does penile fracture happen?
Any situation during intercourse when there is thrusting and when the penis, instead of penetrating its normal location, is hitting some solid structure (such as the perineum). Usually this occurs during regular vaginal sex with the woman on top, but it can happen in the missionary position or during sexual acrobatics. We had this patient who suffered penile fracture after running across the room and trying to penetrate his wife with a flying leap.
A big difference in NYPD and SPD is that NYPD for the most part live in NYC and are a part of their community. They also have to WALK a beat when they start out and further get to know the community and their role in it. SPD on the other hand drive in from Auburn and Renton, drive through the community, and don't even have regular beats let alone walking one, just responses to 911 calls. It's like policing from a 10,000 foot altitude.
@10, where did you hear that most NYPD officers live within the five boroughs? I'm not sure that's true - the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights recommended in 2000 that since most officers didn't live there it might help NYPD to recruit more heavily from people who already live there. The force followed through, and has worked to bolster its NYC resident recruit level. The most recent crop of recruits in July, for example, was 58% borough residents. But I haven't found evidence that they've tipped the balance yet. In 2000 USCCR did recommend NYPD make new recruits live within the city, but NYPD has not made that policy change. They still allow residency in the neighboring counties - counties which offer higher pay and benefits than NYPD, so poaching is a problem.
From the "Letter of Transmittal" of USCCR's report:
For example, the Commission finds that the NYPD does not reflect the diverse population of New York City and that most of its officers live outside the five boroughs. Because many residents have complained that the police force is not representative of the communities in which it serves, the Commission recommends that the NYPD revise its recruitment plans in order to attract more applicants and cadets from communities of color. Moreover, the NYPD should require all police officers to live in New York City, or at least increase the preference points for applicants from the city and add incentives for officers to move into one of the five boroughs.
And bear in mind that cops at this same parade also handcuffed and detained a dreadlocked city council member who didn't produce his credentials fast enough after crossing the parade barrier to make an appearance at the Brooklyn Museum. It's still not all daggering and stuff. http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/09/cit…
You naive reality-ignoring white-guilt libtards at slog left out this part of the story, I'm so fucking surprised!:
"The Caribbean-themed festival was especially violent this year, with nine people shot at or near the parade route. Labor Day weekend saw 49 people shot with seven fatalities, and a gunman even fired into the air just blocks from where Michael Bloomberg was marching, the paper said."
Well, that's awesome that cops are cool enough to feign sexual activity with people... It's actually a positive thing.
However, the sexual and ethnic politics of a white cop (power) feigning doggy-style sex (anal?) with a scantily-clad black woman is pretty staggering.
But you know, I'm an outside observer. These people were doing a thing in the moment, and it seems like they were getting along. So, you know, I'm not gonna pass any judgement on the sitch. They all looked like they were having fun. And perhaps it will actually lead to better relations between the cops and the black community as a whole. One can hope at least.
Just saw one of the local stations' news broadcast. They featured a clip of the video, and asked their viewers to react, the subtext and tone being "OMG, How disgraceful!"
It's when you're taken hostage by a group of broken penises and, over time, you come to express empathy and have positive feelings towards them, sometimes to the point of actually defending them.
Now that's how you get out of a jay-walking ticket.

I'm pleased to report that the viewers didn't take the bait.
