One of the founders of the gay rights movement died yesterday. Kameny served in World War II, was fired for being gay, and sued. He co-founded the Mattachine Society in 1950, coined the slogan "Gay is Good," and staged the first gay rights protests at the Pentagon and the White House—all at a time when people were still being incarcerated, committed, and sometimes lobotomized for being gay. JMG has a good roundup of tributes to Kameny.
