I have to admit I am doing a complete double take here. OK, so part of their statement was: "He's a racist and misogynist and a rape-apologist, too!"
Okaaaaay. Except that in the earlier part of their statement, they *also* said "The Dan Savage Welcoming Committee let him know that he can't be a douche with impunity."
OH HAI WELCOMING COMMITTEE. YOU GUYS APPEAR TO BE PERFECTLY CAPABLE OF MYSOGYNISTIC SLINGING AROUND YOURSELVES.

Here's my thing, it's true that comments have been made in the past that weren't entirely accepting of trans people. But I explain it the same way that I explain South Park to people. South Park got a lot of heat when they did that episode on Islam. But the thing is, South Park had already done episodes on Christianity, Scientology, Judaism, Mormonism, you name it. They make fun of everyone equally. I think the same is true for Dan. He doesn't coddle the trans community in the same way that some other people do, but it's hardly like he's singling them out and making fun of them and them alone. He's a humorous advice columnist. He bashes on everyone at times, not based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, but based on the issues they're dealing with. To call treating trans people the same way as he treats all the rest of his audience "transphobic" is expecting special treatment. Man up (or woman up!) and accept being treated the same way everyone else is.
Seriously, why do you bother?

No, Dan isn't perfect by any means (who among us are), but this protest seems particularly pointless. I've been annoyed by various comments on bisexuality that Dan's made, plus a few on women. I got over 'em.

I like Mr. Savage's work, but I'd never want to put myself on his radar or his bad side. But to equate him with people on the level of Anita Bryant seems delusional.

Later that night, sans Marianne, I was at the Brass Connection, and Dan came up to me. At the time, I was barely out of the closet, and truely overwhelmed that such a role model - and I mean that honestly, for I was one of the first readers of "Savage Love", and simply adored him - would want to talk to me that I responded in monosyllables, and made a very bad impression of myself.
Later, when I got involved in an AIDS charity, I worked with Dan, and was even more impressed with him: he was a righteous force for good in those dark, pre-cocktail days, and he successfully challenged a lot of the sacred cows in what was, at the time, a very smugly self-satisfied "gay community" .
I'm a Beacon Hill housewife now, and removed from all that, but I still respect Dan for all the good he has done, and continues to do. If some neurotic chooses to glitter him for some imagined injustice, you might as well glitter me to: God knows I could use some pizzazz, wardrobe-wise.
