I really want someone to post a story how a group of poodles or collies tear a couple of babies apart limb by limb.
2
Chupacabras are perfectly nice in the hands of competent owners.
3
All I want for Christmas is for Slog to fucking shut up about pit bulls already, it is nothing but boring and irritating.
5
The report says the dogs were gone by the time authorities arrived. Hrmm.

Okay, here's a game. You have thirty seconds to spot the American PitBull Terrier in this line up, all while screaming "MY GOATS MY GOATS":

http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/…
6
I googled "dog mauling labrador" and this was the first story I got: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabelle_Di…

This was not a lab or collie, but Newfoundlands, generally thought of as very sweet and gentle. Also, more recent than the last: http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Oxfor…
7
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-… Another more recent, this one involving a lab and a child. But, you know, pit bulls.
8
Also, visual identification vs DNA identification: http://stubbydog.org/2011/03/misjudging-…

Surprise! They don't match up.

9
Here's one about a collie: http://blog.jezrose.co.uk/toddler-attack…
10
The Goat Justice League will have its vengence!!!!
11
Yikes, that is a disaster.

Still they are awfully sure of the breed for dogs that were gone by the time authorities got there.

I'm not a pit bull fan by any stretch of the imagination (their beady eyes creep me out) but it does seem like many people like call any vicious or scary-looking dog with short hair a pit bull. I think people have over-emphasized the breed, which distracts from the very real problem of vicious dogs of many breeds.
12
Hey, now, don't confuse this with science.
13
And a couple more:

Spot the pit bull mix:

Spot the lab mix:

14
Sorry, @5, that "test" is deliberately misleading, and a distraction from the real issues.
Pit bull advocates have even created deceptive online tests (Find the Pit Bull) to further confuse the media, policymakers and the public. These tests are inaccurate and intentionally crafted to show that the average person could not correctly identify a pit bull. DogsBite (dot) org has created a more realistic test that shows a variety of popular dog breeds. Once one begins to understand the frame, posture and distinct head and jaw size of a pit bull type dog, identification is immediate.
To repeat: http://www.dogsbite.org/dangerous-dogs-p…

15
The dogs (3 of the 4) have been caught:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/20…

They're in good shape but have no identifying tags or chips. The owner will of course NOT step forward, no doubt - they'll just let this batch of dogs be killed and then re-up with another batch of deadly dogs.

Cue the chorus of ONLY BAD OWNERS, NOT BAD DOGS in 3... 2... 1...

16
@14 Because dogsbite.org is an inherently more reliable and less biased source than breeders, of course. Now tell me how many people who are saying "it was a pit bull" have gone through that identification process on dogsbite.org? How many went through it before the dog attack, rather than afterwards? The memories of witnesses are notoriously open to manipulation.
17
Oh, I see. The link that @14 offers, showing how you can always identify a pit bull, explains that ANY DOG THAT COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR A PIT BULL now counts as one.

Yes, that's one way to ensure identification is always "correct."
18
come on goats, DEFEND YOURSELVES. you have horns - use them!
19
I blame the goats.
20
Thanks for the extra two links, @16. And yes, for the average non-fighting-breed-owning, non-fighting-breed-defending person, who rationally wishes to avoid dog attacks to self and loved ones, dogsbite.org, a group concerned with minimizing attacks (a mission I would hope aligns with most fighting-breed-owning, fighting-breed-defending people) IS OBVIOUSLY a more reliable and less biased source than breeders.
21
Max, domestic goats are almost always d-horned. Because while they are sweet and lovable, they are stupid. Their typical thought process is: Can I eat it? No, can I jump on it? No, then HEAD BUTT IT! Even when just playing, a goat with horns can inflict serious or fatal injury to its owner.
22
No one is saying this (liberal media, etc.), but maybe goat faces are just really, really delicious.

In Iceland you can buy a half sheep head at a drive through (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svi%C3%B0), so why not a goat head or baby's face. Maybe pit bulls are the gourmands of the animal world and are on to tastes humans are just not up on (yet).
23
@20 You are a fucking idiot. As are all of the people lumping American PitBull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers, and American Bulldogs together. Let me explain why:

The reason they have a similar morphology is because they're descended from bulldogs, which is an incredibly old breed of dog that has always had a close relationship with people. If you look up paintings of bulldogs prior to the 1870s, you'll see a dog that looks almost exactly like a pit bull type dog. Because that's where the phenotype comes from.

The reason that most bulldogs do not look like this any longer is because they were crossed with pugs and selective breeding was geared towards a brachycephalic skull. Whatever evil impulses lurked in the origins of the terrier crossed pit bull type dogs would have had to come from this stock, since it's the only thing they have in common with American Bulldogs.

Except the brachycephalic bulldogs aren't popular with people looking for an aggressive dog. A different kind of dog owner buys the brachycephalic bulldog than the American Bulldog, which remains closer to the original phenotype.

Owners who want an aggressive dog have been led by people like you to believe the original bulldog phenotype is associated with aggression, so they get the dogs and, because they're the type of assholes who want aggressive dogs, sometimes manage to turn them into just that.

There is absolutely nothing that an American Bulldog has in common with the PitBull Terrier that it doesn't have in common with an English Bulldog, except reputation.
24
@14/20- I realize this is probably pointless since you cite dogsbite.org a well known biased, unfactual site (http://btoellner.typepad.com/kcdogblog/2…) but the two tests aren't even remotely comparable. The entire point of the Find the Pit Bull test is to show breeds COMMONLY MISTAKEN AS PITS along with a pit to illustrate that there are a number of breeds (cane corso, dogue de bordeau, etc). that are not pit bulls that people think are. The dogsbite.org test might as well have had toy poodles, chihuahuas and pug's and a pit. As 23 points out you're a fucking idiot
25
No, OP, I blame you for reposting. Troll.
26
Jesus, people. I posted three links from fucking SCIENTISTS. And the rest of the thread is arguing about the relative bias of blogs, etc. What the fuck.
27
Oh yeah, I forgot I was on the internet for a minute. Disregard my previous rant.
28
jlar@27 Sorry, but nothing you say will matter here. People are worried about what dogs look like, not genetics.

Apparently, you can tell everything you need to know about a dog by the way it looks.

Catahoulas and Dalmations behave the same, because they have spots.
Afghan Hounds and Collies both have long hair. Same dog.
Berners and St. Bernards? They totally look similar and look at how close their names are? SAME DOG.
Beagles and Corgis are identical. Look, they have broken coats and short legs. EXACTLY THE SAME.
A Pembroke is a Cardigan is a Bassett is a Vallhund is a Kelpie.

Oh, wait. That would be silly. Apparently you can only tell everything about a dog's behavior by its phenotype if the phenotype is similar to a Pitbull Terrier.
29
I've made my points, and I won't stoop to calling anyone a fucking idiot. But I will observe that the more you froth, the more you tend to discredit yourselves.

I'm always happy to see the friendly, well-behaved pitbulls and "dogs commonly mistaken as pits" when they come by my house with their responsible owners on the other end of a leash. I'm much less happy to see pitbulls and "dogs commonly mistaken as pits" running loose in my neighborhood—those PADCMAPs are often neglected, and their strength and persistence lets them scrabble over fences. I'm downright saddened to see that seemingly every adolescent boy in my extremely rural town sports a PADCMAP puppy on the end of a leash at some point, because a very high percentage of them are soon ignored when said adolescents get tired of walking them, or realize they can't tie them up in the city park while they skate and they can't work a video-game controller for shit. At least for the time being, there are enough soft-hearted spouses of doctors, lawyers, and bankers to take them in when they wind up at the pound.

I don't think breed-specific laws are the answer. I just want the goddamned FAD to be over.
30
Why aren't Pit Bulls on the Enemies of Slog list? You guys blabber endlessly about them.

I am with @3, shut the fuck up.
31
@ 29: Sadly, our success in pushing responsible breeding is precisely why so many people wind up with pits. Pits and pit mixes are usually the only pups you can still pick up for free or nearly free so folks who can't afford to drop $500+ for a purebred (or, you know, even spaying and neutering of their new free dog) wind up with a pit mix. Some of us wind up taking in those dogs after they've been neglected and abandoned and get them spayed, etc. and then we face the same scorn discrimination as the folks who neglect and mistreat them because we must also be no-good fools to have such a dog.
32
Kill ALL dogs.

They're nothing but annoying (and sometimes deadly) pests.

Liam J. Perk Foundation Sad story. Weimaraner fatally attacks two year old. Family starts foundation to educate families w/ dogs about being able to read dog body language.
"Why was this morning different for Loyd? It wasn't to us, but to Loyd it was his point that he had enough. Enough of what? I thought everyone got along. After much researching and educating ourselves on dog body language, I realized that Loyd was uncomfortable with my little Liam. "
