The problem with a leaderless movement is that the loudest, most fringe elements are the views most interesting to the news media. There are 3 or 4 signs that I have seen at occupy SCCC that advocate for the distruction of the capitalist system. I have also seen the same amount of signs for a more pro accountability system.

After detailing the failures of neoliberalism, the Keynesian alternative is brushed off with "It won't do"? Was there some evidence on offer, Charles? Let's bear in mind that the state has been an excellent tool for corporations and the wealthy, so let's not jump to conclusions about its utility for helping real people.

Based on the behavior of Obama our current economic/political system is more Centrist rather than capitalist (what capitalist asks that government help his competitor from going under?)

How do you get from "the entire European banking sector must be collectivised" to "Keynes without the state"? That's what collectivization means, the state.

Face it, we should return to Reagan's 90% tax rates on Millionaires, 50% corporate tax rates, and 59% capital gains tax rates.

Bill Gates and the Apple co-founders like Steve Jobs had no problems getting rich with those rates.

Oops, meant 50% not 59%

@5, is collectivization the same as nationalization? i assumed they were different.

A system that requires perpetual growth to perpetuate itself is pretty clearly unsustainable on a finite planet. The problem is I have yet to see any theorist anywhere present a credible alternative. The disease is well described, the proposed cures all naive or outright laughable. There are far too many people on this earth and more every second and they all need something to do. Seems pretty likely that the end of capitalism equals societal and environmental collapse.

@8, collectivization without nationalization is pretty much what's happening to the US banking system -- eventually we'll have just the one "too big to fail" megabank, right? Who else is going to do this "collectivization" besides the state? There is no one else.
