If you don't live in the great state of Pennsylvania, you might've missed this helpful public service announcement warning women and aaaaaaall their friends that if they drink too much, they risk date rape. Because as science teaches us, rapists need alcohol in order to exist! And, as Slog tipper Alithea points out, victim blaming goes hand in hand with state-funded public service announcements!

Well, good news via Slog tipper Paul: After receiving criticism for the thoughtless victim-blaming, the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board has pulled the ads:

Stacey Witalec, a spokeswoman for the Liquor Control Board, said the online ad was part of a broader campaign that began a few months ago on the website ControlTonight.com. She said there was both criticism and support for the ad, but the board decided to pull it Wednesday evening.

Witalec said the campaign was trying to bring attention to a serious problem, not suggest rape victims are to blame. "On an annual basis more than 97,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are the victims of alcohol-fueled sexual assaults," Witalec said, "and those statistics are staggering."

That is a staggering statistic but there are better ways to convey it than this particular ad—for instance, maybe the state of PA could give away free beer glasses to women that clearly state "Don't Rape Me" in comic sans. Just as a friendly reminder to would-be rapists that drinking doesn't correlate with consent.
