I went to the original Winter Classic in 2008 in Buffalo, and it was one of the greatest days of my life. Even Crosby scoring the game winner in the shootout couldn't ruin my day.
Sadly, I don't have a go to place here in Seattle to watch hockey when I'm not watching at home, but I'm open to trying new places as well!
Seems like most sports bars are going to be showing college bowl games on January 2. Good luck finding a bar that will be showing a regular season hockey game instead.
@ 6, they're also playing all the major college football bowl games on the 2nd. I don't know why - New Year's Day is New Year's Day, even on a Sunday - but all the sporting people decided that mattered.
I'll be watching the Winter Classic at home. There are few sporting events I enjoy seeing at a bar, especially when non-home teams are involved (World Cup soccer being a huge exception).
@ 10, the Winter Classic has been one of the NHL's greatest successes since the lockout a few years back, and has been a ratings winner for NBC. There will be bars showing it - not as many showing football, of course, but they will be out there.
@11 I believe they're playing the college bowl games on Monday this year because they don't want to compete with the final week of the NFL regular season.
I'm watching it. I'll be at home here in Baton Rouge, because most of Louisiana has never heard of hockey. There are exactly two places that show it regularly here. Both are Mexican restaurants. I still haven't figured that one out.
And the college bowl games have changed their schedules in recent years to increase TV ratings. All the major ones used to be played on New Year's Day, but the BCS games are spread out from the Jan 2-4, culminating in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 9th.
They may not know hockey down here, but they sure know college football. Even if you don't want to know anything about college football ever, it seeps in via osmosis.
@18 a Michelada is lot like a Clamato and Molson Canadian. That might be the connection. I'll be have three or four of those and watching the WC with chips and guac.
@16 The NFL doesn't schedule a Monday Night game for the final weekend of season, probably because they don't want to potentially put a team at a disadvantage by having a short week to prepare for the playoffs.
I'm debating going out to watch the WC. Generally speaking it's a New Year's tradition that I enjoy. However, I live in NYC and I HATE Rangers' fans. They are truly awful. And I don't know if I'll be able to tolerate either their bitching or their gloating. *shudder*
Off topic except for the word "Classic," but I'm pissed that they changed the schedule of the World Baseball Classic, which is at least as fun to watch as the MLB playoffs.
There were three years between the first two (2006, 2009). Now it's set for every four years, meaning the next one is 2013, and not next year.
@ 26, I think every other sporting event of this type takes place every four years. I'm sure that's a relief to MLB and the other leagues around the world. These tournaments are known to be a risk to the health of the atheletes. China's dependence on Yao Ming in basketball is widely suspected to be a contributing factor to the injuries that cut his career short, for example.

How about Thunderbirds Stadium (Kent Events Center)?

HELLZ YEAH I'm watching the Winter Classic!
We were going to sit outside, and watch the game on a phone to replicate the real WC, but wimped out and going to a bar.
