Dear conscientious journalists, if you ever read about cops shooting an unarmed civilian, don't take the cops' justification for what happened at face value.
2
Why not just flee on bike...?

And better advice is Don't Get Shot by the Cops.
3
This shooting is highly relevant to bicycling and will no doubt spark a productive discussion.
4
@1 Sarcasm is wasted on you Pinky.
5
I'm not going to jump to any conclusions here, but I will say anytime the cops shoot someone who is running away from them, my eyebrow goes up.
6
oh thank god the deputies weren't injured while shooting an unarmed man. The kick on the Glock can really cramp your wrist up!
7
ummm would conscientious bikers really need to be told not to flee from the police on foot?

no.

you're imagining a fake community of respectful bikers, when a good 25% of them are total fuckwads who deserve to be hit by a bus.
8
@7 I'm sorry you feel like anyone deserves to get hit by a bus.
9
Sigh.
10
man.. the trolls are especially feisty this morning..
11
@ 10, if only this had happened during a critical mass ride. Can you imagine the comment count?
12
@ #7 - Grow up.
13
@10

David Schmader is the troll, pal. Like the Stranger needs to have a pointless post about every police shooting in the world? This is how you guys make your money. And then you whine about trolls? This is a troll blog.
14
@13 proves my point.. HEY ! takes one to know one..neener neener neener...
15
@7: do you ever ride a bike in traffic? try it sometime. it's illuminating. you'll probably revise your estimate downward.
16
@7 Wow, that was fast. Seven comments until the douche comes out. I presume you would also insist that asshole drivers be hit by busses as well? What percentage of drivers do you think are assholes? Probably more than 25 I would imagine.
17
daymn... what about us folks who can't restrain themselves from touching themselves 24/7

can't get enough of my dink!
18
I have an awesome dink and I can't stop touching it.

I hope I've made myself clear.
19
Why does a cyclist run from the cops when they are completely immune to all traffic laws.
21
Nothing is sadder than troll-on-troll violence.
22
Probably got a cramp from running and was just grabbing his side!

If somebody is fleeing, why wold shooting them ever be considered a justified shooting, unless they were running and actually shooting? (And if you can run and shoot behind you with any kind of accuracy, congratulations!) Shooting a man in the back as self defense used to not be considered self defense. It was considered BS just like the guys who used to commit suicide by shooting themselves 5 times.
23
There are times to touch yourself near the waistband, but while fleeing from the police is not one of them, no matter how much it gets you off.
24
It's sad how wimpy the military and the cops have gotten. First sign of any resistance? Call in an airstrike! Get the SWAT team to drive a tank into their house and open fire!
I'm not saying that I'd like the cops to go around cracking skulls like they did back in the day, but this other extreme of cop safety at any cost is just as stupid.
25
This post has almost everything but it is missing something. Hmm...if only the cyclist or the cop was a Vegan! Then we would have hit the trifecta of Slog! Imagine all the posts.
26
they don't deserve to be hit by a bus because they are bad people -- this isn't a value judgement

they deserve to be hit by a bus because statistically speaking, they are shitty enough city-bikers to be hit by something eventually, and i'd prefer it to be a gov owned vehicle that will hopefully kill them. not my nice little sedan.
27
Let's just skip the shooting an unarmed man because he reached towards his waist for a second and ask the other, more appropriate question:

Why are you fleeing from a traffic stop in the first place? Unless you've got an outstanding warrant or enough smack on you to get you "intent to distribute," Worst thing that'll happen is you'll get a ticket and a reprimand and be on your way.
