After looking at the murals that were vandalized by Poster Giant, it's not possible to imagine how this could've been purely accidental.

Nobody could be so completely blind stupid to not realize what they were covering up with that those cheezy ad posters.
2
Tar and feathering is the only acceptable outcome.
3
Poster Giant is a dreadful company that monopolizes the public space.
4
All advertising is vandalism. The fact that it just happened to literally cover up art this time is only incidental.
5
Someone needs to kneecap people who mess with other people's art.

Especially taggers. Hanging's too good for them.

Honor the treaties...

I have been walking by that building twice a day, on and off, for about fourteen years now. If there was "art" there, it was of that sad 1970's school of covering up empty commercial structures - which is very common in the Midwest.

I don't say that to forgive this posterGIANT outfit - who I have never heard of before this. It's just that this building has always annoyed me. It is a handsome structure, and could be so much more than a palette for whatever we are calling "art" these days.

Fix the building up, get it back on the tax rolls. Then let's talk art.

Poster Giant is pure evil. Anonymous needs to work on them.

@8
Anonymous is not your personal army.

More than anything, Poster Giant just seems outdated as a concept. C'mon, it's 2012, everyone has the internet and the internet is full of Seattle music calendars, whether on venue websites or outlets like the Stranger. I can't remember the last time I looked at a large wall covered with 50 copies of the exact same poster and thought, "holy shit, I must go see that show."

h8 those guyz

@7 can we leave the debate about what is art out of this? It's so irrelevant. The building is a broke-ass shithole and no one has the money to revamp it. At the very least, some folks spent a lot of time and money to make it less of an eyesore.
13
@12 agreed

this building is a free for all that occasionally has charm (like the john williams mural) but at the end of the day it's a boarded up shithole that gets D+ art on it every once in a while.

i've seen posters covering dozens of murals over the years. why is this one so special?

postergiant is a group of assholes for a lot of reasons, but this isn't one of them. fuck that building and its boring art.

@13 OH I wasn't saying that. I walk by this building twice a day on my commute, and I was actually really enjoying the murals. The building looks like shit otherwise, just another boarded-up, abandoned building. And the wallpaper posters don't look great either, they're not even put up straight (huge pet peeve of mine!) I think it's a really big shame that every mural got destroyed. There was a memorial mural there, too. But regardless of whether you consider spray paint murals to be art, it looked way better with the murals than it does now.

I find it a strange twist of irony that the graffiti artists in this case were sanctioned and approved, while the commercial posters were vandalism.

As for Poster Giant, I don't care for the eye sores they subject us to, but they do seem to be doing their best to make this one right. I mean, they're apologizing and cleaning it and not being jerks about it, so there's got to be some brownie points in there somewhere.
16
@ 13 - I'm pretty sure you are thinking of the wall on the hill, this wall is in pioneer square.

Just fyi - I am not affiliated with the painters of the murals that were destroyed, I just got pushed over the edge after seeing what PG did. I've been battling with them for years, so the pressure has been building on this issue.

First and foremost, I am contacting PGs clients to assure they are aware of the tactics of their vendor. As of now, I'm organizing a boycott of Poster Giant, but not yet their clients, as I am quite sure that many of their clients will have some strong feelings about PG's tactics, and therefore, I view their clients as allies, rather than enemies. Poster Giant is the enemy. Their clients are not the enemies at this point. I'm looking to work with them, rather than fight with them, and I don't see a fight with their clients being necessary at this time. However, to boycott companies that choose to do uninterrupted business with Poster Giant, even after learning of their tactics, well, at that point, would they really be any better than Poster Giant? Or would they be enabling them to do terrible things? But ultimately, I'd much rather make friends than anything else... But a company cannot just bury its head in the sand while they pay someone to fuck over everyone else. There must be some accountability
