I look forward to the day there is a meaningless political kerfluffle involving an actual gate (like, say, Romney regards one and quips 'Wow, this isn't as big as the one outside my third home. It's quaint'), and the media trips over itself in its hurry to call it Gategate, and everybody goes, "Holy crap! Wildly appending 'gate' to things is a ridiculous habit that any reasonable person would quickly rid themselves of! Let's stop doing that and never do it again."
2
It's a shitty thing to say regardless. "Oh you didn't make these cookies by hand? Fuck you then."

People have offered me objectively shitty store-bought cookies numerous times, and not only did I not shit all over their generosity, I took and ate at least one.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette pointed out that the owner of the bakery is a Republican who doesn't know who he is voting for next week:

http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/news…

I don't really know the Bethel Bakery - I lived in the western part of the city and it was in the South Hills, and Pittsburgh is still very much neighborhood-centric - but it is apparently an institution.

They are giving away a half dozen cookies with every dozen purchased to capitalize on this slight.
4
The other thing to know is that they take cookies seriously in Pittsburgh. If your wedding doesn't have a cookie table, where you and your loved ones have baked dozens upon dozens of cookies of many varieties (or your caterer has, at any rate), your guests will complain.
5
Is it me, or does Mitt Romney kinda look like he stole Thurston Howell III (Giligans Island) wardrobe today?
6
Mittens, people who aren't paid by you don't guffaw at your demeaning jokes.
7
Why does he hate US-job-creating small business so?

Is it because the median income of small business owners is less than $30,000 a year?

Or because they actually LIKE their dogs?

That said, you should check out the new 7-11 in the U Dist. Damn fine slurpees!
8
@4 for the Pittsburg Cookie-Enhanced win!

(one of my brothers was born there)
9
Willard, you are a klutz of unforeseen scale
10
Where's the Romneybot? I want to here his explanation!
11
That should be *see his explanation....

Fucking unoriginal "journalists"...
15

So...they did come from the local bakery and he was correct?

And the point is...

16
Has Paul completely forgotten George W. Bush? Dan Quayle? Ted Nugent from two posts ago? There is not a single gaffe too largeโ€”for a Republican. Reporting these verbal slips only makes Democrats look elitist and cruel. Mitt's foot-in-mouth will have no effect on votes.
17
@15: He doesn't know what 7-11 is?
18
Is this more, or less, of a "gate" than the pink tie "gate"?
19
C'mon Bailo, why are you so busy here today? Run out of women to gross out? Waiting for the hooker in your trunk to die?

I'm sorry, I can't derive that from what he said.

He supposed they were not home made.

CORRECT

He suggested they came from EITHER the 7-Eleven OR the local bakery.

CORRECT

The proper conclusion is

MITT IS PSYCHIC

The hypocrisy meter is red lining. Must contain the Seattle Insiders.
22
@20 you are correct, Mittens is a side kick.

CYBERSTALKING AND INTERNET HARASSMENT: WHAT THE
LAW CAN DO

http://www.netsafe.org.nz/Doc_Library/ne…

26

#24

Online harassment may also be indirect. The harasser may impersonate the victim and send abusive or fraudulent e-mails in the victimโ€™s name. The victim may be subscribed to mailing lists without his or her consent with the result that hundreds of unwanted e-mails are received every day.

Hostile Usenet posts about the victim may appear or the perpetrator may spread vicious rumours about the victim online leaving abuse messages about the victim on website guest books. The harasser may even transmit offensive or altered images of the victim to websites or provide personal information about the victim online.

#24

Internet anonymity is not as impenetrable as some users may think. The true identity of users who make contact with victims via a pseudonym may be gained by contacting the third party provider who has retained details of the pseudonymโ€™s real identity. The Finish re-mailer www.penet.fi retained logs and details of users which were later seized by the Police to track down online offenders11. Cookies, a software device deposited on the hard drive of a personโ€™s PC on visiting a particular website, can be used to ascertain an individualโ€™s true identity in that it supplies information to the website owner or controller which may assist in identification.

Criminal Harassment

Harassment is criminal where the first person intends to cause the other person to fear for his or her, or a family memberโ€™s, safety, or the first person knows that the harassment is likely to cause the other person, in his or her particular circumstances, such fear.32 Every person who commits an offence on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years.33

Conclusion

Internet users are entitled to assume a safe environment and that those with whom they interact online will treat them with respect. For those who fall below the norms of acceptable behaviour in the "real world" sanctions may be imposed or remedies may be available to the victim.

Although it has been a perception that the Internet is a free-wheeling "rule-free" "anything goes" environment this is not in fact so.

If one view the Internet as a communication system involving real people in a fixed and identifiable location, it is clear that the law must apply. When one removes the technology and considers the nature of the behaviour it may be clear that it falls within the ambit of harassment of domestic violence. The technology may be used as a smokescreen for offensive or unacceptable behaviour but it is clear that the law provides remedies for misbehaviour on the Internet but, by the same token, Internet users should not be oblivious to the potential for dangerous or risky contacts made and communications sent in cyberspace. In the same way that one avoids potentially risky confrontations or situations in the real world, one should behave similarly on the Internet.

This, like the Seamus story, just underscores that Mitt is a rude, out of touch, kind of dumb douche. Not a surprise, but it's fun to hear about another incident this close to his concession speech in November. Keep it coming, Mittens!
32
Never been to Bethel Park, but since I was planning a trip to the hardware store in Mt. Lebanon tomorrow I may have to swing by and pick up some hamantaschen.

At least we were spared hearing one of those nauseatingly white-bread Mittjectives ("marvelous!") he uses when praising things.

Hey Bailo, please leave your personal business out of Slog. The rest of us are trying to be (mostly) positive contributors.

This isnt your personal sandbox for your silly pissing matches.

Please take a LONG break from Slog. It is seriously riling you up.

Cyberstalking

A number of key factors have been identified:

False accusations. Many cyberstalkers try to damage the reputation of their victim and turn other people against them. They post false information about them on websites. They may set up their own websites, blogs or user pages for this purpose. They post allegations about the victim to newsgroups, chat rooms or other sites that allow public contributions, such as Wikipedia or Amazon.com.

36
Cyber-stalking? As if you were worth it. I am merely cyber-insulting you. Christ what a cry-baby.
37

Cyberstalking

Encouraging others to harass the victim. Many cyberstalkers try to involve third parties in the harassment. They may claim the victim has harmed the stalker or his/her family in some way, or may post the victim's name and telephone number in order to encourage others to join the pursuit.

40
What the fuck is going on here? Don't you people have email, or myspaces or livejournals?
41

#40

No.

We only have SLOG.

It is our home.

SLOG.

The cardboard box of web sites.
42
Bailo/SRotU, srsly? Please do yourself a favor and STFU while you still have a scintilla of dignity.

kthxbai.
43
I gladly admit to cyber-insulting you. But whatever, I'll stick to calling you a sweaty creep, a loser, and other things that are quantifiably true.
44
Bailo. This is not your home. Nobody calls the internets "home" except friendless virgin neck-beards.

Please, stay away from Slog for a while. Your humor falls flat. Your contributions are worthless. Go find something better to do.

You bitch about how women won't date you, then you stew in here posting randomly in every thread.

Go make some friends. Develop some hobbies. Get out of your rut, develop some meaningful interests. Make yourself interesting and learn to have real conversations. Stop being such a puke. Give SLOG a break for a while.

Or, y'know, continue stewing in here working yourself up over nothing. 'Cause that's so clearly working so well for you.
45
@42: Too late.

Finally!

Someone who sees the real me!

Are you single?

I'm crossing my fingers for another scandal at the Watergate Hotel in hopes that they'll have to call it watergategate. Or, failing that, a scandal that revolves around water.
49
SRotU is merely defending himself. His initial reaction was overkill, but he did get called a rapist, and a couple other things, and there's no excuse for that. It feels just as bad in the cyber world as in the actual world. Plus there's nobody constantly moderating this or playing referee, and he doesn't have a lot of friends on Slog, so he does what he can. This is just like an elementary school playground. If someone's annoying or we disagree with the person,we can all play rational adults, be a little patient, and allow people their eccentricities. (And you are a bit of a character SRotU, which is fine!) So don't go around revving people without expecting a fight.
50
@46:
That was actually pretty funny.

Strong work.

Look, I basically see myself as the guy in the Nirvana Come as You Are video.

You know, the janitor with the mop.

But given that, I generally almost never personally attack people directly except Fnarf or others with whom have a sparring relationship.

And yes, if you swim with the sharks, prepare to be bitten.
52
7-11 has fresh baked stuff other than teenagers?
53
Bailo, I don't know many sharks, but I don't think they rely on Republican nanny-state laws to do their biting for them. Are you going to press charges against all the bullies on Slog? I think you should.
54
If you were really a shark, you would start a flame war between You-Read-It-Here-First and Slog.
55
Once again, Bailo, you refuse to make a coherent point. Um, quoting the entire text of my message, with no reply? Nevermind, I don't want to know why you do the weird shit you do.

Slog is a neat place, and I appreciate the bejeezus out of the witty, well-read, and smart commenters. Y'all know who you are. Every day I learn something, and it surprises me the depth of knowledge and connectedness here - folks know some pretty amazing things about history and the political scene here.

It's too bad it isn't moderated better to keep the obvious cranks out.

Greasemonkey to the rescue! So long, Bailo.
56
@51
You should count the number of posts in this thread.
Then count the number of posts that you posted.

Then think about how you would go about convincing a jury that YOU were the injured party when the majority of posts were from you.

Then either file a lawsuit or stop trying to imply that a lawsuit is a legitimate threat from you. No one cares because no one other than you thinks that you are the victim.
57
Wonder why he felt the need to degrade the cookies? Why not just say thanks to whoever brought them and keep it moving?
58
Shamefur dispray, SRotU. Commit sudoku!

Please wait...
