Pro-life=death.

Having lost a wife to breast cancer, I've given a lot to Komen and other cancer charities over the years. But I'm not likely to give Komen another cent after that fiasco. There are plenty of other good places to give my dollars.

Maybe they need to do something big and bold to help people forget their super-douchey behavior. Returning to raking it in and using 24% of donations for research may not cut it.
4
Komen cares more about protecting their brand than anything else.

They use donated resources to sue other non-profits for using terms like "for the cure."

Therefore, they obviously care much more about making money than actually curing anything.
5
Komen has been nothing but a blood and money sucking leach on the real suffering of cancer victims.

And beyond this latest right-wing bullshit they were caught with remember a few years ago they were suing smaller organizations who DARED to use a pink ribbon for their fundraisers?

I hope Komen goes under and someone steps in to do real fundraising for cancer treatments and more imporantly a cure....not money for nice offices and high salaries for their executives.

I lost my grandmother to breast cancer. My mom has it now. I have the markers. I am one of those that pulled my support for komen. All women have breasts, not all women have children.
7
Seriously. I dont know who made the final decision on that choice but they should be flogged. Such poor business practices in general.

I think SIFF is screening that documentary about Komen.

I still get emails from the Puget Sound chapter, to which I usually reply, "still not forgiven for the PP debacle" or something along those lines.

Last week, I received an email back from the Race Manager: "we respect your decision... but of course we are disappointed with your decision." The rest of the email attempted to guilt me for not supporting their "efforts." So patronizing.

A colleague died of male breast cancer a few years ago and I've always wanted to donate regularly in recognition of this (his suggested memorial donations concerned his lifelong interests), but SGK bugged me long before this latest debacle.

I'd welcome suggestions as to deserving recipients.

"Komen cares more about protecting their brand than anything else."

Clearly, though, they didn't. You NEVER mess with your brand and yet, they allowed it to happen.

Luckily there are plenty of other ways to fight breast cancer and help women survive it.

There's no reason to donate to Komen. at all. Komen doesn't cure anything- it is an organization that funnels money to *other* organizations that are actually trying to cure cancer. Cut out the middle man, do a little research yourself, and fund those organizations directly. At least then you know you're money isn't going towards frivolous lawsuits against other charities/organizations that dare to use the color pink or the phrase "for the cure".

Not to mention all those teary commercials they run all over daytime TV. Those look expensive . I always got a creepy feeling from their campaigns . It seems like there's a new event every few weeks. Also, made me wonder why there was never a similar effort surrounding other forms of cancer. Like boobs are the only vulnerable body part.

You can always donate directly to the National Cancer Institute instead:
http://obf.cancer.gov/contribute/contrib…

Yes, that's part of the federal government, but it funds the bulk of cancer research in this country, the projects are all competitively peer-reviewed; and you can see on the NIH website which research projects are supported; at present, they've only got enough money to fund about 15% of the research applications submitted to them, including many at UW.
15
I've donated a lot at Komen events, including auctions.

Never again.

@16 You are too awake. Like 2 eight balls in, I would imagine.
18
To all you who wondered if there wasn't someplace better: plannedparenthood.org does so much and they are still being attacked.

If Komen wants to regain their brand, the Board needs to publicly take responsibility, show remorse, and make a meaningful gesture to fix things. Besides a substantial monetary contribution, the best thing would be to release a statement repudiating the skeazy politics of human reproduction. They should make a big production of them denouncing all the right-wing attacks on women's health specifically, and human sexuality overall. Yes, it would mean cutting a lot of ties. It would also align themselves squarely w/ the evolutionary vector of American morality.

@18 for the Insightful Win of the Tiger-tracking Sunny Day.

I suggest Komen enlist the pornography industry. There's a ton of money there! Hello - breasts??? "Ten cents from every dollar spent...", etc. Imagine the t-shirts, with boobs on them! Sex toys and condoms in Komen pink. And instead of a race, an online event called "Fuck For The Cure".
23
If Komen filed for bankruptcy and shut their doors I would shed nary a tear.
24
@22 I want to participate in that event.

Please wait...
