If you find an answer let me know.

I've been trying for 25 years to figure it out.
2
I'm surprised they didn't endorse him long ago. They dream of a republican governor.

How did Seattle end up with such a conservative paper?
3
I think the problem is that you're mistaking the justification for a decision making process.

It's like in sports, when people talk about who was the greatest quarterback of all time; everyone already has an answer, the argument is simply in support of a position already taken. You almost never see anyone determine the criteria first and then see who gets picked.

I do not know, nor do I believe the Times would ever honestly tell you or even know themselves, why McKenna for Governor was a foregone conclusion, but I don't for a minute believe there was any doubt or that what they're describing happened prior to the selection.
4
@ Matt I hear ya. I'm endlessly frustrated by the Times conservative editorials. Not to mention their fact-less arena bashing. Seattle Fox News.
5
The Times is a piece of shit that is wildly, bafflingly out of touch with Seattle. Just like Rob McKenna! Hey-oooo!

For some reason some people still subscribe and even pay attention to what the Times says, though, so this is discouraging.
6
So, the other guy is better in every respect than our guy, but we're going to give the least convincing reason ever why you should vote for our guy.

Got it.
7
@5 It's not too baffling. It's a regional, or even a state paper that happens to use our city's name. The strange thing is that it leaves us without our own daily paper at all*.

*no offense, Slog - you're actually better than a daily paper in many ways. But you'll never have readership to the level where you can create shared-experience between strangers ("hey, did you read that piece in the Slog today..."). Mostly because of the nudity, bad language, and edgyness - take that stuff out, and you've also removed the fun.

With the exception of a break during their last strike/lockout, I've subscribed to the Seattle Times since moving here in 1997. Until today. I guess I have a high tolerance for crap, but the ridiculous McKenna endorsement was just too much. It felt good to give my reason for canceling as "the editorial board."
9
@2 for the Suburban Times win!

Happy Canada Day all you north-heading conservatives!
10
Hardly a surprise - they've been having wet dreams over McKenna for a year now.
The Salt Lake Tribune was much more fair and positive in it's coverage of the SCOTUS decision than the Blethen Times was - what does that say about the Times? It's a shame that when the PI was shut down, Seattle lost the only real daily newspaper in town. Luckily there are some alt weeklies who do a better job than the Times (and win Pulitzers too!).
This just reinforces my "vote against anyone the Times endorses" motto.
11
Yeah, a paper that endorsed Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Barack Obama ... only in certain neighborhoods of Seattle and maybe Havana would that be called right-wing.
12
A paper that endorsed George W Bush, Mike McGavick and Susan Hutchinson... some Seattle Times person has a selective memory.
13
Also, fuck that "management" shit. If that were a valid prerequisite, Abraham Lincoln was supremely unqualified for the office of the presidency.
14
The Susan Hutchinson endorsement was good fodder for many months of jokes about the Times...
Even the few Repubs I talk to these days were shaking their heads over that one.
15
So whom do you guys think the Times will endorse for President this time around?
16
Fucking riot. Why does Seattle Times exist?
17
One minor league debate in Spokaloo, it's still July, and the Times calls it? Wow. That's some serious journalmalism.
18
Derp, June
19
this is about the worst endorsement I have ever read. Not a surprise, however. My guess is that Rob promised the blethens to repeal the estate tax and also agreed to send a nude picture to Joni Balter so she could touch herself.
20
The Seattle Slimes is proof that Gawd exists--how the hell else could that gratuitously illogical, self-serving, intellectually dishonest, intelligence-insulting, asswipe rag stay in bizniss?

The upcoming Rmoney endorsement is gonna be a real doozy.
21
What would it take to destroy their revenue base and end them?
22
Why would anyone think the Times would be logical?
23
I gave up on the Seattle Times years ago. (And I gave up on local TV network news just about a month after moving into Seattle.) I don't bother reading that garbage.
24
Frank Blethen is an asshole.
25
I'm pretty sure this is really old news, Seattle Times did this at least 2 years ago, if not 3 or 4. They just felt bad because McKenna lost both constitutional battles he was willing to put his entire career against. Obamacare and kicking reporters he doesn't like personally from public meetings. Seattle Times had to throw the guy a bone, he's going to lose so hard in November it's going to make his head spin. The whole "using the state government for personal reasons" all the time is really going to catch up to this trans guy.
26
it's a very provincial view to think that spending time in one place somewhere really gives you knowledge. a better vie that by spending time in different places gives you better knowledge. you see your place from another view. in other words, the times view is provincial as can be. do you really need to know the county council chair in asotin county to make better decisions on how to fund education in our state? maybe rubbing shoulders in dc with the folks from oregon or idaho that have an income tax would give you better knowledge abou what our state needs. or perhaps rubbing shoulders with the folks form other high income states with income tax like cali mass md ct nj ny all chock full of millionaires would educate you that income tax works fairly well. whereas limiting your knowledge to what the locals in benton county tell you about the effect of an income tax on economic growth maybe won't give you the best information. and anyway with a whole family here wife several kids including special needs kids plus year sin politics including in selah and representing the central washington district including wenatchee and yakima and such before moving to bainbridge inslee actually knows the state a damn site better than most pols, and better than mckenna. what farmers in central washington did rob mckenna ever meet with and get to learn their economic issues?
27
FYI you mean "Washington state" not "Washington State." According to the AP Style Guide, our state is to be spelled out as "Washington state." For example, "Apple farmers in Washington state report a bumper crop this year." The "s" in state is only to be capitalized when referring to an official agency. "Washington State Department of Transportation today reported that the 520 bridge would be closed this weekend." ETC. We live in Washington state. The Times is saying McKenna is from Washington state, not Washington State.

Anyway, overeducated and underemployed so I noticed that... Carry on...
28
He promised Frank he'd get rid of the estate tax. Open and shut case. Frank is obsessed with passing on his legacy to the younger members of the lucky sperm club in the name of the supposed public service benefits of a family owned newspaper. Hey Frank, so was News of the World.

Within 2 years, they'll need to sell a stake in the company to keep it going. The hospice is coming.
29
In other words: "McKenna knows things about us we'd prefer not get out, and if we endorse him, everything will stay nice and quiet."
30
Crappy, crappy lawyer gets endorsement by the aristocracy to be our governor. Gee, I wonder why?

Please wait...
