Maybe we of the internet cannot separate the yakuza from cinema, but the countless merchants who pay their protection rackets, the women who've been trafficked into prostitution - they can separate the yakuza from cinema very easily, friend. "Their power is not on the streets" is an early contender to win "Least Accurate Phrase (Thursday)".
Charles, I highly recommend this New Yorker piece on an American reporter for a Japanese paper who wrote about the yakuza. If you're not a subscriber I can send you a PDF.
Their power was on the screen 50 years ago, when people were still watching.

Not so much today though.
