Reminds me of how F1 cars are designed to protect the driver in a strong compartment while the other bits (engine, wheels, nose cone) fly off and dissipate energy.

It's not a new idea; I remember on my Volvo 240 the engine and transmission mounts were designed to fail intentionally in a severe head-on crash and drop the engine under the car, so it wouldn't get pushed back into the driver's lap.
