This won't convince any Catholic to doubt their faith. Those who believe in the supernatural and in this particular doctrine are already skilled at suppressing cognitive dissonance. The persecution/martyrdom meme helps too.
The circumstances of each case may well justify the disparity of sentences, and especially the age and traumatization of the younger victim. I do wish we could read the specifics somewhere. Otherwise, we're left wondering what part race played in the sentencing.
Brooklyn: I was thinking the same thing. Of all the sentenced youth pastors we've seen in this feature, 25 years seems very much on the high end. Yeah, there could be circumstances. And/or racism.
@Brooklyn--I'm not saying race didn't play a part in the sentencing, as it sounds like it did. But at least part of the discrepancy was likely due to the difference in ages. The African-American man sexually abused a girl below the age of 14 (ie. a child in the law's eyes) vs. the white man who molested a teenager age 15 to 16. Both very, very wrong, but still a difference in the vulnerability of the victim.
@16 Very true. But, if you read the article link I posted at @11, the contents of the intercepted note from the victim makes it seem like he was dealing with a very silly girl with a wild romantic imagination and a bad case of puppy-love for him. That doesn't forgive anything, he's supposed to be the adult, but it doesn't come across as quite so monstrous as to deserve 25 years.
Ted Nugent got away with his molestation of an underage girl by marrying her. Is that good old Texas Old Testament law? And of course, crazy Ted is also white.
The black guy's charges include aggravated sexual assault, the violent kind, whereas it sounds like the white guys mostly used coercion and drugs on their (slightly older) victims. All three of them are terrible, terrible people, but it seems like the black guy's crimes were objectively worse, hence the longer sentence. Also @11's link suggests he'll only actually serve 7 years.
@1) How do you figure? According to the nutjobs who comment on lots of news sites, all child molesters are gay men....sometimes we gay men just cannot control ourselves around underage girls. (It's a gay thing, you wouldn't understand.)
