However,
these guys are not half the embarrassment that the "anarchist" punks are.
The pretension that they are changing anything is just precious.
The vandalism, just obnoxious.
Has the man in the Phoenix Jones costume faced actual criminal charges for assault yet? There must be something applicable about interfering with a police investigation or something.
@6: Oddly enough, I was re-reading the first few issues of The Boys last night, to the strains of helicopters hovering over my neighborhood. Maybe something along those lines?
If he was actually, seriously interested in doing positive community service instead of just being an attention whore indiscriminately pepper spraying people, I think very few people would have any kind of real problem with him.
FWIW, I actually like the Purple Reign Campaign. I have no idea how effective it is (probably not very), but domestic violence awareness campaigns are a good thing in my book.
Dozens of anarchists smash out windows of small businesses, throw shit at the police, build barricades and trash the neighborhood and The Stranger bravely stands up and demands two nerds in masks stop using their free speech rights.
this is why it's much healthier if you don't give a rat's ass about what other people think. i mean ..fuck phoenix jones and shit.. but really ?.. fuck slate too
How come not a single defender of the anarchists and rioters last night can explain how several thousand actual black and brown working class people (as opposed to middle class white kids with college degrees) were able to march through Seattle yesterday without a single incident with the police?
According to your 'white privilege' world view wouldn't the immigrants' rights march been 'attacked' by the police?
@7 I'm going to guess... yes?
@8 From my brief skimming...sure! Certainly some interesting story arcs going on...
"Meanwhile, Annie January, an evangelical Christian who fights crime as the superheroine Starlight, is recruited to join the Seven, the most elite of the superhero teams. Annie quickly learns that the Seven are not as wholesome as their reputation suggests, as she is forced to perform oral sex on the Homelander to gain entry into the group."
shaming one of the few people that actually tries to do something good sure sounds like a great way to improve society... next thing you know we are like the uk where people just watch disabled people drown in 3 ft of water....Derp Derp Derp Derp
Can't we start by shaming anarchists destroying small businesses by tossing water balloons in their general direction? The superheroes are just urban Larpers.
@18 The problem is they're not trying to "do good." They are living out a childish fantasy. If they were ACTUALLY trying to do good, then when confronted with the evidence that their well-intentioned do-goodery is actually causing harm, they would stop.
"The problem is they're not trying to "do good." They are living out a childish fantasy. If they were ACTUALLY trying to do good, then when confronted with the evidence that their well-intentioned do-goodery is actually causing harm, they would stop."
You talking about the anarchists right? The ones who actually broke windows of small businesses last night?
The media could stop referring to them by their "superhero" names and refer to them by their legal names. Phoenix Jones doesn't exist, Benjamin John Francis Fodor, does. Refer to Phoenix Jones as Fodor, it would be areal boner killer for him. What does that guy do for a living anyway?
Seattle should me more ashamed of what's become of May Day. It's morphed from a protest against corporate greed and for workers' rights, to an annual riot in the streets. I don't understand the anarchists. If you aren't advocating for political change, you're just an asshole smashing stuff in the street.
Phoenix Jones is addressing the lack of foot patrols in areas of Seattle where they are needed. As they operate today, SPD are effectively garbagemen. You call them AFTER something happens and they come clean up the mess. Jones is out there almost every night walking a beat and preventing crime like police officers ought to be doing. If you want to retire Phoenix Jones, make public safety a priority in the budget and fully fund the SPD.
@14 I agree....there's a bit of a frustrating double-standard here. The immigrants/workers rights rally was big, loud, and may have made the evening commute a nightmare, but it was orderly and there were no incidents (that I heard of) with cops or others. The peace was kept.
That's not an excuse for excessive force later in the night, but at some point you have to ask, well, what do we expect? It pisses me off to no end. I potentially would hold some sympathy for the anarchocommunist demonstrators, but I don't. I have more radical friends that would theoretically be all for their demonstrations, but they're more pissed at them than I am (for "giving anarchists a bad name"). So, what are the masses of relatively apolitical citizens and commuters taking away from this? What the fuck are these guys proving?
As for the "superheroes", yes it's dumb, yes it's counterproductive. But I think perhaps there's a larger problem to address.
I walked right by the proper rally in front of the Federal Building in the late afternoon. Those guys make me proud to be a Seattleite. Actually attempting to organize in a high profile, constructive, visible way. No one was pepper sprayed then, despite a lot of media and spectators practically waiting in anticipation.
here is what happens to a society that embraces what this article suggests. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-…
if we lived in a city where people were actually willing to help one another I bet Jones would be out of a job.
Christ, what a bunch of uptight pissy-pants. So a bunch of freaks run around in costume (outside the unsanctioned parameters of a comic-con even!) and make you worried the rest of the US doesn't take Seattle serious enough? Good lord you people are boring.
The reason the Stranger and Paul Constant don't note that thousands of black and brown working class people had no problems with the police but a few stupid, privileged middle and upper middle class white kids with college degrees did, is because the latter are the Stranger's readers.
Isn't it nice how a bunch of ignorant do-nothings want to attack somebody actually trying to do something? You people are a bunch of twats and armchair activists. There are huge problems in this city nobody attempts to address. The cops drive right by drug dealers and street fights, they purposefully avoid the neighborhoods these guys patrol so they don't have to do the dirty work. So they don't have to make change. You know who protects the corporates and banksters with no regard for the actual citizens? Yeah, that's the corrupt-ass racist SPD. This is a pathetic hit-piece written by an angry and ineffectual narcissist. Why don't you assholes try to do something good instead of breaking down the small group of people actually trying to make the world better. Do you even know these people? Pheonix is a good man trying to do good in this world. If you doubt his motivations, look at the job he got fired from when his identity was made public by the villians in our police department. He was teaching autistic kids. True altruistic pursuit. Since none of you know what you're talking about or step up and try to improve this shitty world we live in, you amount to a bunch of asshole jocks beating up the nerdy kid because he busted on your teammate for raping a girl at a party. I've actually met the guy, had conversations with him and he lives with a true desire to help people. Shame on you idiots for wanting to stop that and shame on your empty statist mentality.
- start a campaign to recognize real life superheroes, the unmasked folks who help others and don't stand by when people are in need. Could even just be those who call the cops or fire department. That would take the cachet and spotlight away from the jackasses in tights while more properly celebrating the spirit they ostensibly uphold.
- start a legal fund to file civil suits on behalf of anyone pepper-sprayed or otherwise harassed by Fodor & his wannabes and who isn't subsequently charged with a crime. Defending himself against even one or two valid lawsuits will put him out of business. He doesn't have a.) money, b.) supporters with money, or c.) an army of supporters big enough to raise money.
YOU ARE BORING.
VIVA every superhero, born freak, made freak, drag-queen, space nun, fairy, brony, leather-daddy, belly-dancer, burner, hippie, artsy-ass, LARPer, cosplayer, trekker, slutwalker, artclown, uber-goth, lumberjack, plushie, twerker, crust punk, derby girl, nudist, carny trash, glamazon... ETC.-- and BOO to anyone who ever tries to shame you or uses the phrase "grown-up pants." VIVA SEATTLE.
Seattle problem #1. Whining about people who are trying to help other people is really a new low. Do something about it or just shut up. The whining is the worst.
@18 - I'm as big, probably bigger, fan of portmanteaus as anybody—but what is "bankster" supposed to be made of? Are bankers also fond of pranks? Cranks? Spanx?
Paul is just upset that he is too much of a weak, pudgy nerd to fight crime.
I give the superheros some cred, they actually stepped up and did it, meanwhile losers like Paul will continue to masturbate to the deeds of cartoon heroes.
This article is hilariously dumb. Who cares if these guys decide to spend their nights dressed up as "Superheros" roaming Seattle. Who are you to say we shouldn't "tolerate" them? Should we all start to yell at and silly string all the drug addicts hanging around downtown who constantly harass people catching a bus? How about all the homophobic drunks invading Capitol Hill on the weekends? Or countless other groups that truly are stains on Seattle's character. "Oh no, people are making fun of Seattle because of our fake superheros" For fuck's sake, maybe you people are the ones who need to grow up. I'm glad to read that there are many leveled headed people responding to this post.
"I'd love to see an entire block of Seattleites shouting 'GROW UP' at these preening fuckwits as they mosey around feeling good about themselves."
Yes. Nerdy types should go back in their corner and feel bad about themselves again. Because that's obviously how they should be slotted and kept. Fucking nerds feeling good for once. Let's kill that before it becomes a trend.
Dude, I'll be they'll let you play if you just ask.
To those spouting about "well-intentioned activism" is always good...
Really? Fucking really? Yes, sometimes well-intentioned activism doesn't help, it hurts. It causes more problems. You go back to the drawing board and you try again. You don't keep going because you get your jollies off on living some childhood fantasy.
Real Life Super Heroes are to crime fighting what "No Child Left Behind" was to education.
The Slate article leaves the impression that Seattle, alone among American metropolises, suffers from this "superhero scourge", as if we're the only city "silly" enough to tolerate such a phenomenon. Whereas the truth is, there are literally scores of so-called "real life superheroes" running around in cities all over the country: Atlanta, New York, Cincinnati, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Miami, Los Angeles - it's a pretty long list.
Or is it just the perception that it's only in Seattle that real life superheroes represent some sort of public nuisance?
You know why guys like Phoenix Jones exists? Because we don't trust the cops. Simple as that. The cops here are crazy, borderline racist and generally act like they are PTSD. As much as we are annoyed by folks like Jones, we tolerate them at the same time. The police sense this from us and do very little about them besides occasionally arrest them.
There seem to be a lot of people in here (@21, ahem) who are unaware that Phoenix Jones is hurting people, and is not on the right side of the law. Why he's still allowed to do this shit after that pepper spray incident outside of a nightclub is incredible.
I'm not defending his MO or his wrongheaded decision to protect corporate assets instead of people when there are protests, but, you know, I actually kinda like Phoenix Jones.
He seems to have this certain kind of apologetic self-awareness that what he does is ridiculous. I don't know if any of you have actually talked with him or seen interviews or anything, but he knows he was a dumb, angry, impulsive kid, and he talks about how this whole superhero act is just kind of how he channels his anger problems and thrillseeking into something that's (narrowly) on the right side of the law and, at least in principle, attempts to help people. From what I've read, he does actually do at least as much good as your average neighborhood watch, and that's better than nothing.
I'm not saying he's all that successful. He gets into trouble with the cops often enough, and for every mugger he tackles, there are probably half a dozen protesters who get pepper-sprayed. I'm not really defending him, even. I just... kinda like him. I do. I don't think he's an embarrassment or pathetic. He's just a goofy guy trying to work out his personal problems in a way that's fun and nominally decent.
And as a final note: I can't for the life of me understand how some of you people just loved the shit out of Colton Harris-Moore and still hate on Phoenix Jones, unless it's racism. Is it racism?
If a call to action is to be made on such a platform as SLOG, maybe it should be one of activism toward community improvement rather than pick on people who "in their minds" are trying to actually help. Since the community won't help itself and chooses to ignore street thugs, why call for such action against this tiny group of people? The outrage, embarrassment and "shaming" should be toward the criminals, not the flashy attention whores. Misdirected outrage is one characteristic of a coward.
It's bizarre to me that people are making this specious argument that those who oppose Phoenix Jones and his Jolly Band of Total Cunts are "uptight and being too serious" when it's a known fact that this asshole has actually assaulted people and has taken actions that have directly contributed to the escalation of violence and other bullshit that has threatened public safety. You can attack the "anarchists" all out want but at least the argument can be made that they stand for something. And hell, at least they can claim involvement in the creation of the labor aspect of May Day (since the actual day started to commemorate the massacre of anarchists and other labor organizers). All Phoenix Jones's dumb ass represents is American paranoia, vigilantism, para-militarism, and simplistic comic book escapism. Fuck that guy. The only reason Seattle has such a throbbing hard-on for him is because the city's full of escapists whose entire easy, coddled lives revolve around tv shows and comic books.
@everyone who says I should be writing about something else, rather than this: Welcome to the internet, where space is unlimited!
@everyone who says some variation of 'they're not hurting anybody:' They're going out and looking for fights. Even if nobody has been hurt yet—and that's a debatable point—I promise you that somebody will get hurt. And plus, it sets a terrible precedent. I'd rather not live in a Seattle where everyone feels compelled to forcibly enter into everyone else's business, armed with mace.
Shame is the tool of religion, used to make its targets more easily manipulable because of their increased need for redemption. It is not good for society, and I think we'd do better using a different tool to remedy our own social problems.
@35: What do you mean 'you people'? And as a matter of fact, I *have* done more to help my community than these losers, by volunteering my time at local food banks. Do they have anything unexciting and non-violent like that on their resumes? I don't think so.
@61
"I'd rather not live in a Seattle where everyone feels compelled to forcibly enter into everyone else's business, armed with mace." - Paul Constant "Journalist"
Then go the fuck back to the east coast where you belong.
Maybe Paul Constant should be shamed into retirement. Any fag can monitor all the rumors on Twitter. Why not cut out the middle man who reprints it as fact?
I live in the Puget Sound Region because I like it weird. And the weirder this place gets, the better.
Phoenix Jones and his team need training, EMT-Basic style training to make them effective at helping people. I'm not saying we should pay them or anything-the city's broke as it is. But we can definitely turn them into something useful.
As for the crazy outfits? Have you forgotten that this is Seattle? The Emerald Fucking City? You named this town after the Wizard of Oz and you're complaining about a group of adults with infantile fantasies? Right, because wanting to live in Dorothy's Dreamworld shows just how fucking grown up you are. Click your heels three times and maybe you'll get sent to Kansas. After a few hours of Midwest boredom, you'll be begging for Phoenix Jones to bring you back to the Freak Kingdom.
You know what makes life endurable for me? Drag night at Julia's. A statue of Lenin that occasionally has xmas lights draped over it along with bizarre clothes. Attitudinal baristas. People riding bicycles through town naked and calling it a protest. Crazy ass musical acts in rundown Wallingford bars. Funny people who know how to laugh at themselves. Knowing that whoever you are, you can fit in here. Overhearing 13 different languages on a half hour bus ride.
I feel safe here. This is s place where I can live without fear of somebody attacking me because I like to suck dick or because I'm on the Left and don't believe in gods. This is my home, too. And I hope you won't ruin it by driving out the weird.
Hahaha these comments are entertaining. I am one of the alleged superheros. My opinions on how things should be done may vary from others I am not phoenix Jones but started following him on the radio while I was at work during last year's may day. I joined late Iast summer. Let me give some back ground on myself. I am college educated in criminal justice. I am not a residence of Seattle. I have 8 years now in the military and am proud to serve the people of the United States of America. I do not agree with everything the government does and that's my right and I defend that right for you honorably. I sacrificed a lot of my personal time to include missing my first born daughters birth. I too have been arrested for being carelessoon my motorcycle. I volunteer with local youth programs. I donated a entire truck bed of toys to the ywca in east Seattle that was robbed, that pleaded for help. I AM NOT AGAINST anarchist in fact I think it's great they get their voices heard. What I do not support is when their freedom of speech interfers with others safety and property who choose not to be involved. I AM NOT a member of any bank in Seattle but I do acknowledge that some people work there just to support their families.
I was not apart of May Day 2012. Please do not associate me with that. I like to remain neutral in judgement I have been around the world a few times and well cultured. I have aided many cultures even if I don't understand or agree with the ideas.
My goal is to use my experience and training to protect people's right to a productive safe protest and serve the people. I raised my right hand to serve and preserve the rights of WE THE PEOPLE of the United States of America.
You have the right to protest i support that. But I will also protect those who do not wish to be involved to include their property.
And now I've gone and agreed with Cascadian Bacon. You made this happen with your privledged uptight whining Paul and I don't think I can forgive you for it. Just because you can do something (like write this or buy guns) doesn't mean you should.
Look at that - I'm conflating your writing with the idiocy of stockpiling firearms. You made that happen too. For shame.
@43 - Bankster is to bank as gangster is to gang. See also mobster, hipster, etc. I remember first hearing the word around the time of the 2008 economic crash and pretty regularly throughout the Great Recession. Google shows approx 927,000 occurrences.
I think the phrase "preening fuckwits as they mosey around feeling good about themselves" applies more to the idiots running around the streets vandalizing local businesses in the name of Sticking It to the Man. At least the RLSH's are trying to help.
@80: The only thing worse than people whining is people whining about whining. Or whining about whining about whining [...]
@83: You're assuming that anyone's playing value judgments about the RLSH that don't also apply to the black bloc. Good intentions don't apply to vigilantes, and again, if we don't trust the police to properly do the job, why do we trust some asshat on the street to do any better with unchecked authority?
Okay everybody. lets do this one together. Let's all let out one long, slow collective whine about how Seattle sucks because we're all geeks and nerds. Ready?
Honestly, I'm appalled by people like you. How dare you discourage people who stand up and make the world a better place. How dare you try to "shame" these RLSH. Some of them risk their lives to help people everyday, others roam the streets on their own time, after their long days of work, and they pass out food, blankets and water to the homeless.
You're all selfish, truly and deeply selfish and you're all the downfall of this once great country. I commend these heroes who are entirely selfless and put others before themselves.
If even one person in all of Seattle looks up to them, then who are you to try and take that away from them?
You have to understand the mind of a nerd; we have coped with ridicule all of our lives, so ridicule is not going to stop him.
To clarify, I'm not a RLSH, just a nerd.
these guys are not half the embarrassment that the "anarchist" punks are.
The pretension that they are changing anything is just precious.

You brighten my day.

as long as they aren't hurting anyone and staying on the right side of the law who cares?
Our city has 'super' heroes. That's kinda silly - and fun.
Super Heroes are, by default, incredibly selfish
