I got three such emails, and was wondering about this. Thanks.

Treehouse and NARAL for me.

I've gotten about eleventy billion emails about today, starting about a week ago.

Thanks Dave for the Hollow Earth shout.

You missed KEXP

I wish the Seattle Foundation's site had a better explanation about what Give Big is. That said, I agree.. today is a nice day to give. So many great groups to donate to. I happy donated to Hollow Earth Radio.

Yeah Hollow Earth. Hope they get tons of money.

I am personally torn. The impetus and momentum is a good thing and a boon to non-profit orgs. Yet, the timing is not ideal. Many orgs have end-of-fiscal year giving drives that this effort can derail and actually drive smaller per-donor gifts and/or this is the season of fundraising auctions and galas and this can also be a distraction for those well-planned events.

I also think the Seattle Foundation should be able to state what the stretch pool is, be able to actually put Foundation dollars commitment behind the effort – if even it is a minimum.

And... then there is the long-term impact. For organizations to grow and thrive, they have to rely on a life-time value relationship, unmitigated and unmediated, between donor and organization. This event can derail that.

So, I question as to whether this truly is, as you referenced in your short-version: "If you intend to give any money to a Seattle-area nonprofit this year, today is the day to do it."

I just don't know.

I do Planned Parenthood, ACLU of WA, Urban Rest Stop/Low Income Housing Institute, and FareStart. (No Strangerites do either of the latter?!)

Nice choices on that list of staff choices, good picks all over.

My email reminders were from U District Food Bank, Northwest Harvest, Center for Wooden Boats and KBCS, so I guess they get the moneys.

Futurewise, which does God's Work on Earth fighting sprawl here in the state of Washington, Cascade Bicycle Club, Bicycle Alliance of Washington, and the Sightline Institute, without whose hardass and impeccable research on transportation issues I could not have written my thesis.

@8 - there is no way to state what the stretch will be for each organization, because it is determined by the day-of giving (I did notice that this year there is an option for casual donors who can't decide on an organization to give to the stretch pool - not sure if it's new but I don't recall that last year).

There is definitely a conundrum for NPOs around donor cultivation and whether longtime donors will use this as an addition to annual giving, or instead, but even with some of the sticky specifics I don't see any way that GiveBIG can "derail" long term relationships with donors.

I do think GiveBIG has a far more substantial positive impact on smaller-budget NPOs than large ones, though.

Kona Kai Chefs/Halo Network is another great one, similar to FareStart down in Kent.

This event is much better for those organizations that have supporters who are on-line - in other words, causes that attract younger donors. Eastside Friends of Seniors serves the elderly, and has a bevy of supporters who don't even have an email address, much less access to a computer (think of the over-85 set). We have a harder time rallying our usual donors to GiveBIG.

Nonetheless, summer is usually the individual donor doldrums, and a campaign like GiveBIG gives a boost to our fundraising efforts.

Got an update from www.kithcares.org (7 Hills of Kirkland cycling event beneficiaries). They help homeless families with kids. A SNAFU disabled their page on Seattle Foundation website. An anonymous donor offered to make the same "stretch pool" match for donations on their own website. So they got mine.

GiveBIG and Rural Washington Kids Will Keep Learning This Summer! Your gift will go towards our Feed Your Brain project that pairs summer learning with free meals in the most isolated parts of our state. We received 31 applications for summer programs, but so far, we can only fund 12! We need YOUR HELP to raise $5,000 to fund a 13th summer program! http://www.seattlefoundation.org/npos/Pa…

The Hollow Earth Radio link doesn't go to the right place.
Their page is here: http://www.seattlefoundation.org/npos/Pa…
