The original version at the arcades and as a stand alone definitely pre-date 1978.
I would also be extremely skeptical of the 1978 date for the Atari 2600 version, but that seems to be the on-line consensus. Getting old sucks, everything starts to blur together.
Paddle games without a true paddle controller, are lame.
