I'm sure Dan Savage will be aaaaaaallllll over this.

From the article: Two pit bulls, 1 mixed-breed dog, one Pomeranian.

I bet they shot the Pomeranian.
4
Seems like a dog-bites-man story to me.
5
Please let the record show: dog number four was a Pomeranian.
6
Where's a good Mastiff-Poodle crossbreed when you need one?
8
Only a Stranger hack could turn a pom into a pit bull. Never change, you guys.
9
Owning a pitbull through a rescue seems humane enough...but owning one with intent (and taking it on the bus, for example) is like have your middle finger perpetually flipped to the strangers around you.
10
What is this "update" bullshit? You can't just change facts like that, Bethany.

Someone bring me a table to flip over in my rage!
11
So, you can just shoot dogs when they bite now? When did this happen? I was bit by a neighbors french poodle when I was little. It pissed me off and hurt but I don't think the little bugger deserved to die.
12
An insistence on private facts being necessary to the security of a paranoid minority, the right of the people to keep and bear pitbulls shall not be infringed.

@11,

Apparently it bit hard enough that the initial victim needed immediate medical attention. And the dogs were threatening medics and police. I often think cops are too trigger happy with dogs (and humans, for that matter), but, in this instance, what were they supposed to do? They were trying to corral the dogs into a yard, but the mixed breed was apparently too vicious.
15
The increased occurrence of police shooting dogs comes up in this Salon article (“Why did you shoot me? I was reading a book”: The new warrior cop is out of control / SWAT teams raiding poker games and trying to stop underage drinking? Overwhelming paramilitary force is on the rise)
16
Remember, under our state's Stand & Defend law, it's ok to have a licensed concealed weapon and shoot all the pitbulls you want, if they stare at your crosseyed.

Or bark.

The behaviour of a pack of dogs, i.e. 4, is different from the behaviour of a single dog.

Well......since I live there and the guy in question did NOT need immediate medical attention and was not in life threatening condition, nor did he need much other than a big band aide, they did NOT need to come through MY yard to get to the injured person. They had the dogs cornered and kept coming at them, throwing things at them and spraying them with mace and fire extinguishers....and approaching them in their home in a threatening manner. Had they just backed off and kept them in that area, we could have arrived home and had this under contol, and NOT ended up with a dead animal. Watch the film from the helicopter, the brown dog is panting and pacing back and forth exhausted....not charging at them. SO...maybe all of you should think before judging the situation, or the breed. And one of the four that got loose was a god damn chihuahua that they were protecting, as you see in the film as well. The dogs may have mistakenly set loose by a worker that did not realize we were not home and just took off after realizing that the dogs were there. We are not understanding how the dogs got out, and my neighbor has a rotting fence that they refuse to fix that gave them access to get out of their own yard, they would have been contained to their own area had that not been an issue. ALL of this is blown way out of context and there are so many holes and lies being told about the story. You should realize that someone lost their animal in this and there are people mourning this loss as well.

Lets get something straight here, I live there, this man did NOT need immediate medical attention, and had no life threatening injuries that required the medical personnel coming through my yard. The police had the dog cornered in the front yard of their home. If you look at the helicopter footage the brown "pitbull" is panting and exhausted. They were throwing things at him, and chasing him with mace and fire extinguishers, unprovoked. He was not charging them, and they knew they had them backed up in their own front yard, and that me and the dogs owner were on the way to the house at that moment. The dogs got out possibly due to a worker trying to access the house not realizing that we were not home and then left the back door open, which should have just contained them to their own yard, but because the neighbors refuse to fix the rotting fence they got out into their yard. These dogs were hot, confused and being chased and threatened by many many people. SO this is what they considered a huge issue that needed 15 cop cars a fire engine a news crew etc. Any one who understands dog, or "pack" mentality knows you do not do this to animals of any breed or size, you can also see in the video they are surrounding and protecting a fucking chihuahua...who was the fourth out of control pitbull they reported.
Take into account someones dog was shot, that wasnt necessary, they would not let us through to give him medical attention, and he laid in our front yard dying and then dead for hours before we were allowed to get to him at all.
Think before taking the work of the media as fact
the man who got bit....left the hospital with only a tetanus shot...not even antibiotics which is standard for a bite wound that penetrates the skin...because it DIDNT. that was your VICTIM who needed extreme measures for medical attention

sorry about ranting twice, I thought it deleted my first post. I am just very upset over the whole event. I am also upset that once again Pitbulls are getting the bad rap for something that isnt worth the blame

A simple yes to each question will do..did your dog leave your property and bite someone that didn't provoke an attack? Did your dog go out onto the public street and aggressively attack the firemen who didn't provoke an attack? Lets get a few things straight. Were you there?...No. Did they go through your yard to get to the victim?... No. They went down the victims driveway. The dogs left your property and attacked them in the street. Were they were throwing things at the dogs? Your right, I did see one of the firemen, as he was backing away, throw something as the dog lunged at him in the street. Nobody I saw was ever chasing your dogs or attempting to provoke them. Who would attempt to provoke two pit bulls? After your dogs attacked the firemen and the police as they arrived, they used one of their cars to corral the dogs back onto your property to prevent them from coming out after anyone else. If the dog wasn't charging the officers then why does the video show it dead right where the police were standing? Why would a panting and exhausted dog decide to attack 20 or 30 minutes later? "It's the breed". And if you decide to keep multiple dogs with pack mentality, you will find yourself in this "situation" again. The officers knew you were coming home? Do you really think that they wanted to shoot your dog before you got there? You own 3 or 4 dogs and a couple of them are known to be an "aggressive" breed. The fence between you and your neighbor is rotten and you want them to fix it? Anyone that "understands dogs" as you seem to, should know better. At some point shouldn't you take some responsibility for containing your animals instead of putting the blame on your neighbor?
I'm sorry your friends dog was shot, but I think your "rant" is completely based on emotions and not based on facts. I would caution anybody reading this to also think before taking your words as fact.

actually no they did not go down the victims driveway, they were down my long private drive. SO yes I find a huge issue with going down my driveway to get to a man at another address. I have evidence that they knew we were coming home and animal control wasnt even called until after the dog was shot, and it was shot on my property. The man that was attacked was swinging a paint gun at them. They broke out of their own yard due to the fact that the neighbor refuses to fix a rotting fence and they got out through that. They also were contained in their own home and somehow were let out??? Do we know if one of the workers tried to get into my house and figured out there were three huge dogs there and just left the back door open?? No we dont. Lets get something straight if three huge pit bulls wanted to bite someone with any real seriousness, they would have attacked many of those people and bit them. The man that was bit barely had a wound and was treated with a band aide and a tetanus shot. I work in the field and have been bit many many times, if its deep you have to get antibiotics and medical attention. Who would attempt to provoke them, people who do not understand animal behavior, and that would be human police officers, throwing things, mace, smoke bombs all of these tactics make them escalate, the animal control officers who are trained in this area would have handled it different. They dog wasnt charging the officer in the video if you look at the area, the dog was going in the direction the other dog was in, the officers were in the other corner. You will be seeing ALL of the footage at some point because we have requested to have it all. There is an investigation going on. I in no way condone that they bit anyone, that should have never happened. But lets get real, accidents happen, things we can not control happen when we are not at home. Your pet may get out and do something that isnt like their normal behavior, because they are an animal, we forget that we are not dealing with something that speaks or is like "us" An exhausted dog is running on fight or flight and if you keep going at it with objects its going to eventually feel the need to defend itself. Again I have been doing this for over 20 yrs, I have seen how animals react over and over and over again, and I have also been trained by several animal behaviorists.

Also, unfortunately these are not my dogs, they are my roommates, I am actually defending them. One was picked up by animal control 4 blocks away and walked right up to them...sounds really dangerous right. One was a chihuahua mix, who was being protected by the other two. If you were there you would know that is my private and long driveway, the neighbors only have access to that driveway to bring out trash and recycling to a common area at the end. They are not supposed to use that as a walkway, their driveway and "front" door is down the other street. They also have failed to mention that they had a dog that used to break out all the time from their fence issues and come into my yard and has bitten my ankles a few times, I also helped them get this dog out of a situation that it was stuck in the fence as it tried to bite in fear, but I helped anyway to make sure that the dog was ok. Those kids have been in our front yard with the dogs running around several times over the year, and nothing has happened. My frustration is with the system, there was no need for 12+ cop cars, helicopters, fire engines, it looked like a mass murder had occurred there, and the guy had an abrasion. I work 10-15 minutes away, I wasnt notified until the situation was way way out of hand, I should have been called the moment the dogs were discovered loose. I feel horrible that someone got hurt, I feel even more horrible that a dog was shot and killed, or left to die on my front lawn without any medical attention. I see hundreds of dogs a year that get out of their house by accident and get hit by cars, in fights with other loose dogs etc....no one plans for this to happen and its always a tragedy, and its multiple different breeds. I can tell you I have been bitten by more small breed dogs over the years than any working breed. If the dog had intended on hurting the painter, his arm would have been in pretty bad shape dont you think??? Pit bulls have one of the type bite strengths of any breed. It would have possibly done permanent dammage, when they have intent to harm they dont let go and they shake violently back and forth, this bite wound was a warning bite, which still isnt acceptable, but he was letting the guy know he was scared and not ok with something.

Please wait...
