Christ. Like I needed another reason not to visit that shithole.

Can we start some sort of rescue program for the poor sons of a bitches that were accidentally born in Texas? If you opted to move to Texas (even Austin), you aren't eligible. But for native born women, queers, general liberals who want to leave once they're 18, we can set up a dollar a day program. Maybe give them a bus ticket to a sane part of the country, and enough living expenses until they get settled? I'm only half joking about this.

It's amazing that legislation like that can happen in a Western democracy. It really must be like living in a foreign country down there these days, since trying to imagine something similar happening here (in Washington State) is nearly impossible. The humiliation imbedded (and intended) in that legislation is mind-boggling.
4
Terrifying. Fucking terrifying.
5
"Stop having sex with all Texas men."

Ditto my response here.
6
It's appalling, awful, and those ignorant rednecks should not have the right to tell others what to do. But have you ever seen the word "loophole" used that way? Don't they mean "hoops?"
7
The problem is that those guys passing the bills, are already not getting laid. Withholding sex is not going to work on them.
8
How about a boycott of all things Texas?
9
I agree with #2. I'd fully support a refugee program for women, racial minorities, and queer/transgender people who live in states where they are actively being persecuted or denied rights.

Are there any nonprofits that do this?

The pro-choice movement has largely been stalled because they failed to include men. They need to sell to men that if they knock up women they're on hook for child support payments for 18 years. They need to instill that fear in men of the consequences of unwanted pregnancy.
11
I love me some pro choice, but aren't you know like 50% of Texas voters women? Can you mansplain that part.
12
Ahh, so women are good enough and responsible enough to make decisions about their health but still can't be responsible enough to pay for their own Birth control.
13
France has a 7 day waiting period and abortion is illegal after 3 months. Hasn't hurt women's rights there.
14
Friends keep telling me to consider Austin as a possible place to live when I'm tired of the cost of living where I am. "It's not like the rest of Texas at all!" they say.

Sorry, no f'in way. Austin is just the new West Berlin, apparently.
15
I love the way they used incest as a verb.
However that's not an endorsement for incest, I just like verbage.
16
@15 - "I love the ... incest ... verb."

I hear you loud and clear.
17
#13 We are not grateful to be better off than the women in France when it comes to our rights. They are not the standard. American women don't owe people who snivel about abortion shit. If you expect compromise what the fuck are you going to give up. Are people like you going to come to people like me and get our OK before you decide to have children. Mind your own fucking business about women's bodies and fuck what they do in France.
18
@16 don't evaluate my negligees, you father of modern psychology.
19
Let the idiot women who want that stay in Texas, pay to get the sane women out of there, and then nuke the entire area from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Oh, and if SCROTUM has posted his bullshit about the Natural Family Planning method and how awesome he thinks it is, fuck him too.
20
To the idots who think women who don't want to have the baby should at least "compromise" then ride this train assholes.

@13 Also comprehensive sex ed, free birth control, smaller better IUDs for women who haven't had kids (all the ones in the US are sized for post birth, which means they can cause problems for those who have not), free tummy tucks after every cesarean section and 10 kegels classes after vaginal birth to "retone". As well as significantly greater financial and health support to mother and child during and after pregnancy. Also, I doubt they are forced to look at sonogram pics, or attend a class. RU486 is very widely used. And according to a Google search which I am sure you can repeat to your satisfaction, the seven day waiting period is usual but not mandatory, is coming from the doctors not the gov't, abortion is legal for medical issues after three months including birth defects that are merely handicapping but not lethal, and a minors parents can't be told. Also, there is extremely cheap public transportation to many neighboring countries (it costs about $100 to get pretty much anywhere in the EU), so it's relatively cheap to pursue other options, cheaper than it would probably be here in the US). So not exactly equivalent, right? And yes, it still is restricting women's rights. Canada has no restrictions, and they seem to be doing ok. Why don't we do that?
22
@7

Not true. They have their cows.
23
If we pull progressives out of Texas, we only cede more political power to the conservatives left in the state. Quite the opposite, we should be pumping progressives into Texas until we take the state over, as we are doing in Virginia. Then we can ram progressive policies down their whiny, conservative throats.
24
Think Bleeding Kansas.
25
If we're going to punish people for having sex, we should punish both genders equally. Woman wants an abortion? Make her sit through an adoption course. Man wants a Viagra prescription? Make him pass a "how to find a clitoris" exam.
Probably on a plastic model, not an actual woman.
26
Can't we just invade Texas already? I mean, they're going to secede soon anyway. I'm thinking a Reconstruction-style occupation for however long it takes Texas voters to realize that women are people and zygotes are not.
27
It's not a declaration of war on women's autonomy. This started decades ago, and they didn't have the courage (or the cohesiveness) to give a formal declaration. More of a "police (brutality) action".
28
Women are too irresponsible to manage their own reproductive organs but not to irresponsible to manage what comes out of them? Sorry, but I don't think we, as a society, need any more kids born of these fundamentally irresponsible women. Sorry, women, no more babies for you!
29
I really like Texas, but their "politicians are all swindlers and loco" (-Ray Wylie Hubbard, true son of TX) and unfortunately a large portion of voting women in Texas are too blinded by the goddamned bible to vote in their own interest.

I think that the separation of church and state needs to be enforced like martial fuckin' law in politics. Lets respect religious freedom by letting them not have abortions and respect logic-based rationale by leaving the fairy tales to those that want 'em.

I'll guarantee you that a large portion of Texans feel persecuted, but its hard to leave home. I left Kansas and still toy with the idea of going back... but its been 10 years and haven't convinced myself yet.
30
Us Texas libs need to stay here and work hard, very hard, to get more people out voting! It's hard to worry about politics when you have sick uninsured children and work two jobs. I pledge to support those men and women, to empower them to be heard!

We have been revitalized and renewed by these attacks. Did you not see the thousands of us that spent 12+ hours every day for weeks at the Capitol building, testifying, protesting, and trying to make ourselves heard? I don't need to be marginalized by my fellow progressives now on top of 2/3 of my government ignoring me.
31
@30 Yes! Keep on fighting the good fight. If we decide to abandon anywhere the fascists are trying to take over, we'll simply be conceding more and more ground to them.

I won't be joining you in Texas, though. It's a weather thing...

32
#28 Great twist on flawed logic. Rick Perry and company should be careful what they wish for. The principal of the issue can be applied to anyone. China does it.
33
I don't understand the big concern here ! Your talking about SHORTPACKERS DUDE ! Why do the women even matter when so many Texans have Elsie in the barn already !!!!

Please wait...
