Charles,
Read about that yesterday. Weird behavior by the parents. Most definitely dangerous and irresponsible too. They and their children are most fortunate to be alive.
When do we start taking bets on when they try another stupid stunt? Or are we just going to assume that they tried, failed, and are going to give up.
Personally, I think their god led them to Chile on purpose. Abortion is illegal, religion is more open, and yet they're accepting free flights from the very government that they failed to rail against. Hypocrites.
Do we have to save people like this? Can't we just pick up the boat when they're done with it (dead) and give it to the next church down the street to load up again?
@5 - only if there is a guarantee we don't waste resources rescuing them.
since they're so tired of the heavy hand of government promoting social welfare and homosexuality, I hope the recuse expenses for these idiots are being borne by only themselves, or whatever "faith based charity" they subscribe to and not the taxpayer!
@13 - It's true that you have to nip them before reproductive viability or the genes propagate, but then, we can be merciful to the children because this is cultural, not purely genetic, and the replacement rate for religious nutbaggery is below 1, therefore they must evangelize, proselytize and gain converts...their own offspring tend to reject them.
Sigh... and who wants to bet they'll thank their imaginary gawd for saving them rather than the actual real living people in real boats who actually fucking saved their worthless lives?
I don't really blame these stupid people. They've been led astray by a howling chorus of voices on the right, from Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck to Pat Robertson and James Dobson, and a hundred others, all of whom have gotten fat and rich peddling eschatological nonsense to gullible people who mistakenly believe that extremist religion has something to do with living right. I'll bet this family has read every volume of Tim LaHaye's "Left Behind" series.
13, If you accept the fundamentalist world-view, it was their choice to be born to morons, and that they should accept the personal responsibility for it.
@10... my assumption is that they got repatriation loans from the State Department. That is, if you get your ass in trouble while abroad or at sea, the State Department will probably loan you money to get back home. So yeah, it's tax-payer financed, but your expected to pay it back. Lee Harvey Oswald, once he figured out Communism in Minsk wasn't much of a party, took advantage of a state department loan.
Most of you are totally missing the faith boat. They had faith and did not die i.e. by their own lights - they were saved by God. He must have big plans for them or maybe just one of the them and the others got a free ride. The lesson they will learn is to do crazy things and trust God. The fishermen et al were His instruments to carry out His plan. Faith don't need no logic.
"The family was "fed up with abortion, homosexuality, taxes and the 'state-controlled church'" and decided that going nowhere was better than being somewhere."
I don't get it since the couple were from Arizona.
@23 I was not suggesting that we return to a state of nature, but noting that if we are run with the natural selection analysis, no reason to save the children.
How wonderful it would be if all the crazy, religious loonies volunteered to become fish food. What a joyous day ! Except leave the children... they aren't guilty of stupidity - there's still hope for them.

Sounds like this episode of I Shouldn't Be Alive:

In this case, combine three parts fanaticism with one part (catalyst) AynRandianism, and watch the reaction produce 2 parts moron + 1 part idiot.
