1
He got his message across fine.

It was his history of lying and backstabbing that did him in.

And his worship of his Liege Lords in the One Percent.
2
Sawant just loves to twist the knife.
3
So...Sawant supports a renewed Teen Dance Ordinance?

Seriously, though, is she incapable of being a gracious winner? Does she want to actually advance her positions, or just shout them from an office on the second floor?
4

The best part is the remaining Council Members are going to have to sit and listen to Sawant every minute of every day of their now miserable lives. Are the meetings televised? You couldn't buy better entertainment if you tried!
5
It looks like Conlin wore his Applebees Host uniform to the press conference. At least he's got a job...
6
@3 Awww. That poor old man, she called him blasé... she obviously doesn't know what it means to participate in our civil realm of politics! For shame that she had the nerve to thank him for his service. Oh the outrage!
7
@6 - how did she thank him? She 'respected' that he had been a public servant, but then went on to continue to insult him. That kind of attitude is not a good way to win allies, which she will need to get to five votes.
8
@7 oh right, she didn't say "thank you" per se just that she respected his willingness to serve.

OH THE INDIGNITY! SHE MIGHT AS WELL HAVE SPIT ON HIS MOTHER!
9
@7 yeah I agree. It will interesting to see if she continues the same way on council. It's going to be an interesting 2 years.
10
@3, re the Teen Dance Ordinance, if that's true, I regret my vote for her. I thought I was voting for a real alternative candidate, not lesser Seattle mommy state advocacy.
11
@10 - oh, I doubt she has ever considered it. We won that war years ago. I was riffing on her statement "While I do not agree with Richard Conlin's political positions..." Richard helped dismantle the TDO. So, therefore, based on that statement, she must support it. Totally tongue in cheek part of a serious observation.
13
I just Richard' concession email. It was well put, gracious and to the point. Would that he had been so on the Council.

Where we people get their Schmidt burritos now?
14
Your serious observation was seriously worrying over how this incivility violates "Our Traditions".
15
Elegant timing, to get a Socialist elected just as we are getting these bullshit Grapes of Wrath race-to-the-bottom ultimatums from Boeing!
16
Okay posting during the husky game is bad idea.
17
7, whelp, that hair is properly split. your contributions are now of value.

18
I am surprised and delighted.
19
I appreciate the restraint of this piece. Good work, D.H.

Michael P. is right on in @3& @7. The Sawant campaign is tone deaf on this. Excited in victory, sure. But grace & compassion are both necessary to be effective. Hoping to see better from the new Councilmember in action.
20
Suck it Seattle Times, in your cutesy, condescending "she'll never win but kinda changed some things" editorial. Guess what? She did win.
21
@18 Ditto.
Council meetings are going to get a lot more fun to follow.
22
Poor guy. Losing isn't easy. His staff is in a tough spot too. Maybe she will graciously let the staff keep their jobs.
23
Have any of you read what Murray said about McGinn? Get off her back; she hasn't even taken office yet. Conlin was very dismissive of her during the campaign, and where does he get this "we" business? He ran, as an individual. Of course he's disappointed that he didn't get another 2 years of a good salary and nothing really to do, but maybe he should have wakened up and noticed what was happening.
24
So who is the other Socialist that won in Seattle a hundred years ago. Papers keeps saying "Seattle hasn't had a Socialist on the City Council in over a hundred years" (rough recollection). A Wobbly in out past. Huzzah!
25
@7 She doesn't want to win allies like Conlin, that's why she ran against him! You don't make change by lowering yourself to your opponent's position, you challenge them until they adopt your position, such as the $15 minimum wage alla Mike McGinn and Ed Murray.
26
Congratulations to Kshama Sawant for a momentous win!

Congratulations to The Stranger for championing her!

Congratulations to Seattle for voting for real progress!

Things are looking up!
27
@24: Anna Louise Strong, who was elected to the Seattle school board in 1916. HistoryLink has an essay about her here: http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?Dis… That article doesn't cover the disappointing period after she left Seattle and traveled to Russia and then took residence in China, where she asked "Famine? What famine?"
28
AW Piper was a socialist on the Seattle City Council back in 1887. More info: http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?Dis…
29
All of those frowns are making my night.
30
@3, @7, @9, @19, etc.

Awww, she's not "gracious"; she's poisoning the relationships even before she gets there--so that's what people mean when they refer to concern trolling.

Granted, Dom didn't give us a transcript of remarks here, but I don't see any congratulations from Conlin, so by your standard he's not a good loser, then. And as this is a political press conference and not a legislative one, what the hell are two Councilmembers and scores of staffers doing standing in solidarity with Conlin? Just by being there next to him, as opposed to, say, watching from the audience, Bagshaw and Burgess are pretty clear about their thoughts at the prospect of Sawant joining their insiders' club.

So Sawant is creating friction? Fuck that.
31
@23

What did Murray say?
32
I'm guessing Sawant will wear out her welcome in record time ... that record currently held by MIke McGinn.
33
This is awesome news, though the knife twisting seems unnecessarily unkind. After all, Conlin is a guy that the Stranger endorsed multiple times, not some nefarious arch-conservative demon. Either way, good for Seattle for pulling off this minor miracle! Should be a fun couple of years.
34
Does Sawant now take leave from her post at the community college? Not that two paychecks wouldn't be pretty rad ...
35
If you all think that was "knife twisting", you must have some thin skin there in Seattle. Are you just as disappointed in the lack of congratulations from the loser? Is only the winner supposed to be gracious?
36
@34
I read the other day that she's on leave now. Presumably she'd stay on leave.

If she goes back, her classes will be in high demand from students.
37
@30 well she basically just called all her new co-workers corporate hacks. Don't know about you, but I wouldn't call that making a good impression with co-workers. Getting things done on council is about building consensus. But in two years we'll all see if she's the great socialist new hope or a lesser McGinn. Remember how excited everyone was at McGinn? Where's my miles and miles of bike lanes?
38
Wow, most classless asshole to win office in recent memory. Her shitty attitude should help her accomplish lots during her short term. Will be fun in two years when then new third district cans her sad ass.
39
@23
Never mind, I just realized you probably mean Murray's election night remarks. I thought you meant something more recent.
40
Awww. Richard Dreyfuss has a sad! So does Sally Jessie and Ick! Damn! Now you can't just wield the rubber stamp! Poor, poor status quo council members!
41
Technically, Sawant won the election and will be in office.
Realistically, Conlin lost.
I don't think for a million dollars she understands that and probably thinks she has a mandate from The People to Crush Capitalism.
It will be fun to watch the entertainment.
42
And you can bash Conlis but he's done a lot of good for this City, he's stood up for the vera project http://www.seattleweekly.com/2001-10-03/…. The Stranger could be a class act and could write up a piece on all the shit he's done...You can bash what he did in his last term, but he has done great stuff in the other three...
44
@39, I've been searching the Slog/Stranger archives and can't find what I was talking about, but maybe you remember that Murray basically said, "I have affection for Mike McGinn but obviously Seattle wants to get back on track, etc." It was not as obvious as Sawant's remark about Conlin but it was passive-agressive at its worst: McGinn's a sweetie and I love him dearly but now it's time to do things the right way.

And Sawant's remark that Conlin was blase to the end is true; he just couldn't understand that voters might actually vote for someone else; after all it was HIS seat because he'd sat in it for 16 years.
45
@44

Yes, that sounded very familiar. I just googled "affection for Mike McGinn" and got the results you were looking for. It's in that loooooong "Empire Strikes Back" post of election night.

He thanked Mayor McGinn "for his public service," and the crowd applauded politely. "I will always remember Mike McGinn with affection," Murray said—here's where the SECB looks at the camera with bug eyes and shrugs in disbelief—and then he promised to be "mayor of all of this city." Murray spoke of an "energized" Seattle and "turn[ing] the page" in history.

http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archive…
46
@44

Yes Conlin was blasé, and maybe a bit clueless.

Hard to fathom that he didn't tell audiences that "It may sound like a joke but Sawant literally wants to have the public 'take' Costco and Nordsrtom and Starbucks." He could have made it into a very funny riff.

Her margin of victory was so small that had he simply quoted her, in her own words on her own election web site, about her desire to nationalize the Fortune 500, then I suspect we'd have a different election result today.

So yes, sarah70, you are correct, Conlin was blasé, even after her very good showing in the primary, (in which I voted for her, FWIW). I thought he looked bored and frankly didn't really care about the job. So in terms of drive and energy, there is a rough justice to Sawant's victory. She earned it.

Is she clever enough, graceful with people which whom she disagrees, to be able to actually use the position? We'll see but based on how she has handled herself so far, my bet is "No."
48
@46

WIW is nothing, because anyone who believes your claim that you voted for Savant is gullible enough to need someone else to have power of attorney over them.
49
@37, what you say may be ideal: "Getting things done on council is about building consensus." But 7 of the current 9 Councilmembers have had consensus without doing anything constructive. Listening to them in meetings and hearings is really difficult: they are obviously bored, or clueless, or patronizingly dismissive, or all three. The way they fell in behind Murray during the campaign, and then behind Conlin in his defeat, is telling. They don't like being disturbed. I expect the remaining 6 will freeze Sawant out like mean girls in middle school, and I'm sure she expects it also. She should be given respect for walking into that unpleasant situation even if you don't like her views.
50
@48

Thank you, I was just about to call him on that particular pile of bullshit.
51
@49 I agree with a lot of what she says, except for the extreme socialist views, much of her views fit in well with Keynesian capitalism. What turned me off was her AMA where she phrased many things in "us vs them" ideology. I hope she is able to do a lot in council, but I think she'll have to drop a lot of the rhetoric.
52
Complaining about the graciousness of her victory speech is really grasping at straws.
53
Seattle elects a socialist and on the same days starts to sink into the ground...coincidence? :P

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Bertha-b…
54
No, in fact I did vote for Sawant in the primary as if anyone should give a fuck.

But then I heard Sawant talk at a candidates forum and much to my distaste I ended up voting for Conlin because I found Sawant to be boring. Humorless. Totally conventional and filled with cant. Too much BS. And I gather I am not the only one who gets that impression of her. She doesn't wear well.

A friend was telling me tonight that "Yeah, but you should have voted for Sawant, at least to get Conlin off the Council." And he may have been correct. So while I am glad that Conlin will be gone, I think that Sawant is going to be a big ho-hum.
55
@54

I just realized that you don't give an actual fuck what happens. You follow this stuff because you want to sit back and tell yourself how clever your punditry is. You're what's known as a bullshitter: somebody who doesn't even know if he's telling the truth or lying, and doesn't care.
56
@55

My assumption was that he does give a fuck, but the fuck he gives is wanting her to fail.
57
@55 and @56

Thanks.
58
@52. Wrong.
59
Hey loser politicians like Conlin, McGinn, Romney, McCain and the rest of you idiots. Here's a newsflash: YOU GOT YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS JUST FINE. THE VOTERS REJECTED YOUR MESSAGE.

That's called a reality check for you all. Seriously, the "message" excuse is a bunch of fucking bullshit and should be ridiculed as such by the press.
60
This does make her "you are real the losers, Seattle" tweet when she thought she had lost look even sillier now.
61
All the sooth sayers commenting here have no idea how Sawant is going to perform one way or the other. There is a world of difference between campaigning and governing as she will quickly discover. I voted for her because change is needed and I hope she performs well. I am not holding my breath in the hopes the rest of the council gets this message, she has a real challenge ahead.
62
The other council members are veterans of the campaign trail. They know that things get said which may be impolitic. I'm sure they are well familiar with setting all that aside a bit and getting to work. Sawant is going to face resistance because she is going to make proposals outside the council's comfort zone or which go against prior decisions. Things said during the campaign are hardly going to rate.
63
It's always "the little people must not have heard us," never "the little people must not like what we have to say." Idiots.
64
@37: "Where's my miles and miles of bike lanes?"

Have you seen Broadway at any point in the last six months or so?
65
I can't wait to hear about Councilmember "Schwinn" Sawant in the Seattle Times!
66
@37: Or Nickerson. Or Dexter. Or Greenwood. Or Stone. Or Roosevelt.

Conlin being blasé is one of the nicer things Sawant could say about his condescending campaign.
67
@60

Don't make shit up. Here is the tweet. The Sawant campaign was rude to Conlin, they realized it, and deleted the tweet.

Here we are ten days later, and you're mythologizing it. I guess we should be telling ever more hyperbolic stories about how Conlin arrogantly dismissed Sawant during his losing campaign. Turn it into a Romneyesque opera, maybe. Why not?
68
Conlin made one of the worst political mistakes, he underestimated his opponent, and assumed he would stay in as a 16 year incumbent with no accomplishments.

Many people voted for Savant just for the sake of change, and she had a well funded (from the least coast) campaign and really got her name out there. Most people who voted for her font have a clue about socialism except "it sounds good." They have no idea that she is a marx/lenninist, because 50% of the voting public is below average.

Already people are seeing what a bitch she is and regretting her vote. Like any rabid commie she is totally impersonal and humorless. She made her fame from jumping campaign to campaign based on popularity, If you have ever been an activist you will know how fast trotskyist will jump on a working campaign then run it into the ground. She is gonna get her shit recked having to actually work in politics. She will be done in 2 years and people who voted for her will feel duped.

The next election will be by district rather than city wide so it will have more local vote dominated by transplants who live in SLU or Capitol Hill. The district she lives in has contains Broadmore the only republican district in Seattle , Blacks and Jews were banned until 1976.)

TLDR
The voters will realize they got what they deserve and she will be out in 2 years.
70
@68 how is Broadmoor, aside from money, going to dominate the District 3 elections? They've got, what? 60 voters? 80? 100?
71
@68

But Five Large, you guys predicted she had no chance. You guys predicted her percentage wouldn't hit double digits. Remember? Remember how confident you were? How smugly you lectured? You accuse Conlin of underestimating her? What about you?

Don't remember? I remember. Shall we go to video and play back your words?

So now, even though your last prediction was dead wrong, now you're all back predicting she has no chance in 2015. Isn't your prediction that she will have no chance in 2015 just as full of shit as your prediction that she didn't have a chance in 2013? Shouldn't we look at your record of error and discount your opinions accordingly?

If I'd been that wrong, I'd shut the fuck up, Five Large.
72
@13, Conlin’s emailed concession letter was “gracious”? “Unfortunately, it appears that my opponent has received a greater number of votes…” is NOT gracious. The result might have been unfortunate for Richard Conlin but not for the royal everybody. And “I hope that she will serve the people of Seattle effectively…” is little short of an insult when he is being mourned out the door by the remaining incumbents.

As for the complaints about Sawant’s purported lack of grace, @30 is spot on.
73
@71
I may have underestimated the stupidity of the voting public, but I never underestimated the stench that arises from between Savant's thunder thighs.

You are pretty vocal today, are there no kiddies to diddle on saturdays?
74
@71. or at least try
75
@73

Misogynist body image insults don't really do anything to deal with your problem of being so wrong. You might not like her thighs, but she predicted she would win, and she was right. You? Wrong. I bet anybody would choose to keep their thighs the way they are and be right than conform to your standard of beauty and be so wrong, wrong, wrong all the time.

Blaming the voters is an all-purpose excuse, isn't it? When your prediction is wrong, you pretend they're all dumb. When your prediction is right, somehow they magically wised up. Wrong again? Oops, guess voters are stupid, again. Always after the fact you trot out your excuse. We call that unfalsifiability.

How come you were too dumb to see how stupid the voters are before the election? Because you're saying they're pretty fucking stupid. Stupid that bad ought to be detectable. Yet it went right by you until now. How come?

Also, since you so desperately want this to be about bodies, would you please post a photo? We'd like to judge. If all you're giving us is wrong predictions, we might as well get some eye candy to go with it. Pic plz.

76
@75 not you I meant @73 too. what a slab of jerk
77
@75

I have a feeling you could find him at the PI. Just look a correlations in insults and writing style. Then again, all the conservatives at the PI look like shit aside from this guy Baldbridge (who, like Cascadian, is a huge gun nut) who happens to be a huge closeted faggot (I hate using this word but that's the best way to describe his vitriol against gays and his obvious homosexuality).
78
Bottom line is she won. And so far as I've heard, she did it without vote tampering or any funny business. She ran a good race by not saying too much.

Let's give her a chance and see what she actually does what she gets in office.

She may change her personna and develop a real human touch and turn out to be a brilliant politician (in the positive sense.)

So let's just step back and "Give Sawant a Chance."
79
I have doubts that she will be joining the prestigious and insiders-only Rainier Club anytime soon. Looks like the happy hour of the other Council members will be a minus one. It will give them a chance to chat about her in private.
80
Love the fact that the Friday SEATTLE SLIMES just couldn't, just COULDN'T bring themselves to put the words "Sawant Wins" in their headline on the race.

You almost think they believe that if they don't print it, it didn't happen.

Pathetic.

As was Conlin's refusal to actually congratulate Sawant on her win. Basically, all he said was "don't fuck up".

81
I'm guessing that Conlin loss because most voters wanted Sawant,not because they specifically hated CONlin:if they didn't like either candidate,then they could've voted for somebody else during the primaries in August.Duh . . . .
82
Prop I (concerning campaign-finance reform of Public-Sector elections in Seattle) is only six-hundred votes shy of tying the "No" votes-- I think it is already in the recount range. ---- http://www.kplu.org/post/seattle-public-… .MAKE SURE YOUR "YES" VOTE IS COUNTED:CHECK TO SEE IF KING COUNTY ELECTIONS HAS YOUR BALLOT BY CALLING THEM!!!
83
I'd like to see The Stranger do a story on Washington's uniquely unfair jobless-benefits eligibility criteria:requiring a certain amount of hours instead of a certain amount of income.Blantantly unconstitutional,in my opinion. --- http://www.constitution.org
84
Sawant's detractors: WAAAHHH WAHHHH WAAAHHH I WANT WHITE MEN IN CHARGE I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN WOMEN WIN ANYTHING EVER WAAAHHH WAHHH WAAAAHHHHHH WOMEN CAN'T WIN BECAUSE THEIR TITS GET IN THE WAY OF EVERYTHING WAAAAHHHH

It is so yawny listening to old men complain about how when women win - the .0009% of the time that we win anything - how we did it all wrong and followed winning by being the wrong kind of winner. Seriously, lads, shut the fuck up.

Ms. Sawant, congratulations. I hear you on the corporate shills, go forth and do the best you can do, being up against what-all you are. Which includes a lot of bleating from terrified white-man-sheep that nothing any women do ever is right because WOMEN but we maybe won't say women, we'll just use every dogwhistle for 'women' we can think of without saying women, blah blah fart yawn. Whatever. I'm glad you won and seriously fuck Conlin and his 'oh, pffah!' attitude running against you, it's fun watching him eat humble pie now, bwa! ha ha ha ha.

Please wait...
