at the slog staffer 100, why don't you post some of those comments I only previewed disphit

Don't secular humanist universities send letters to homeschooled fundamentalist Christian kids--who take college aptitude tests?

If you start saving the college advertisements that you get now, by the time your kid leaves for college you'll be able to wallpaper your house.

Man, this Dirtclustit person is insane.

Incomprehensible text walls, NASA moon landing conspiracies, odd punctuation/syntax, fits of angry swearing, and general denial of science in favor of religious texts.

It takes all kinds, I guess.

@102: are you saying 100 was grey? You might have unregistered comments hidden. If that is what you're saying because who the fuck knows what you're saying at this point.
So yeahhhhh, no moon landing.
That about does it as far as your credibility goes.
You crazy, and we done.

@101: Wow, ok. Thank you for removing any question of whether I should struggle through your posts.

1: Wow you don't know the laws of physics.
2: Wow you really don't fucking know the laws of physics.
3: There are experiments which can be done which prove that we've been to the Moon. They demonstrated in Big Bang Theory even.
4: Wow you really don't fucking understand a thing about physics.

@24- Science changes as it's understand of the world increases. The words in the Bible are the same now as they were 1600 years ago. I know which one supplies better information on which to base ethical and moral decisions in the 21st century.
108
@97- I think instead of ""morality and altruism have a scientific basis" the @12 meant "morality and altruism have a scientific explanation."

@106: I had been reading this thread and had wanted to respond to her, but got busy this weekend. Now, I think it is safe to say that we can forego any further debate with her, since she has made it clear where she stands on these topics.

I feel bad for Sloggers of faith, because it can get pretty snide up in here for them, and then to having someone like dirtclustit come rampaging through with the walls o' text rants and now, full on denial reality makes it even harder.
Science and faith, in my opinion can exist side by side, because they apply to differnt spheres, the natural world, and the impulse toward the divine. Maybe a spiritual experience is all just chemicals in the brain, but that doesn't detract from that experience. It's still real for people.
I don't know, I tend toward the skeptical side, but I work for Nuns, and that's been an eye opening experience regarding people for whom the spiritual life is their life.
I think it has value.

@105 I'd respond to him but your line of "You crazy, and we done." pretty much sums him up. Besides I would have zero credibility to him since part of my childhood was payed for by NASA. My mother not only worked there but if you see any pics of the moonshot astronauts in their working clothes you have seen some of what she did. No not the clothes but the mission patches. She designed most (if not all) of those. She was a graphics illustrator at NASA and therefor, according to guys like him, was part of the conspiracy.

Wow, you're stupid. As a moderately religious Jew with a hard science education, I can tell you you're nuttier than squirrel shit.
112
@109: I'm a capital R Rationalist, but I have some very religious friends. Ultimately, as the pope says: As long as you strive to be a good person, your faith is not important.
113
@111: Did you see her creative interpretation of Genesis yesterday? Epic use of the word haploid.
114
@101: Dirtclustit, I think I've solved the puzzle: "Possessed bottle of Dr. Bronners soap." Did I win?
115
&110: What a cool job!

So when your parents (I'm assuming you're too young for a spouse by your comment) say they love you you tell them to stop it, yes?
I'm inclined to take their word for it (and my wife's, for that matter). But since it is an act of faith, I wouldn't require anyone else to believe them (though I would, doG help me, think more highly of those who did).
Most of the truly important things I believe aren't subject to 'repeatable proof.'
Agreed! But you also have to recognize that subjectively derived understandings are only as good as the arguments you make within the moral and intellectual understandings of those whom you would convince. If my views are derived from a mix of Western rationalism/empiricism, Western pantheism, and Eastern pantheism as practiced through Nichiren Buddhism, your assertions must either appeal to those understandings or offer some reason why I should believe you--unlike the rest of humanity--actually are more capable than I of discerning truth or engaging in moral philosophy.

That is, subjectively derived perceptions are, for the most part, not transferable. To the degree that they are, they can only be judged according to the veracity of the interlocutor.

@107

Er, meaning changes according to audiences. I think they teach that in freshman English. Unless you want to claim that everything that could ever be said about Hamlet was done centuries ago. (And besides, people are looking at different translations of different versions of the Bible.)
119
@101 How dare you, sir -- HOW DARE YOU. According to the traditions of my family, space travel is SACRED and we celebrate the anniversary of the first moon landing every year as a high holy day.

Can somebody get Buzz Aldrin to punch this guy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wcrkxOgz…

@118- Interpretation varies, but the text doesn't. Science progresses, The Bible (and Hamlet) only progress as much as their audience. I like watching a Shakespeare play, and I understand there are lessons about human nature in our literary history (secular and religious). But science is an engine of progress, it gives us more and more insight.

@114: Oh dear lordy that's funny.

S/he is completely mental, makes sgt doom sound reasonable and coherent.
122
@120

I think that might actually be an apples-to-oranges comparison--a single work (the Bible) vs. an entire discipline (science), or perhaps set of disciplines. Science is a human interpretation of the natural world, just as history is a human interpretation of human events. And science itself as we currently think of it has changed over the centuries. When you mention scientific progress I think you are referring to a process of knowledge acquisition and compilation that are essentially a series of discoveries, but I think you're assuming a stable concept of science.

Dear everyone,

Esp the idiots, if you are too stupid to understand the math --- or that idiot men have problems admitting when they crossed the line between honesty and dishonesty/truth and lies --- then you'd know that what those same idiot men are calling a straight line away from a single point in space (which is exactly what those dumb motherfuckers who believe in the big bang say) what those idiot, ignorant, piece of shit men say is a straight line, is one small portion of a really long arc, ie part of an orbit around a Celestial Center.

JUST LIKE EVERYTHING IN SPACE DOES THAT IS MOVING. IT REVOLVES AROUND A CENTER AND AS IT DOES THAT IT SPINS.

JUST LIKE EARTH DOES AROUND THE SUN, JUST LIKE THE MOON DOES AROUND EARTH, JUST LIKE THE SUN DOES AROUND IT'S CENTER JUST LIKE THE WHOLE FUCKING MILKY WAY AS ONE BIG GALAXY IS IN ORBIT AROUND ITS CENTER AND SPINNING AS IT GOES AROUND

so you're too stupid to see it, or you have too much invested in the lies, big fucking deal, as of today 12/18/2013 gregorian/idiot years, you are the majority

you don't have believe me, you may just want to remember it --- just in case --- otherwise fuck you, and have a wonderful day in your fucked up world, I say "fuck all that noise" if I am going to be in trouble for stating the truth, I might as well say it

CAN YOU HERE ME NOW!!??

FUCK YOU!!
