A word of caution: Godden originally filed to run on the very last day possible in 2003, upsetting a field of the incumbent plus two challengers (who had already been campaigning for months) with her sky-high name recognition amongst the octogenarian primary-voter crowd. Godden, along with Cathy Allen, has been plotting to get Jessie Israel, who is like some kind of superhero to them, onto the council for years. I strongly suspect Godden may file, keep saying she's running, then withdraw on the last day of filing as Israel steps up to file for what could be an uncontested seat.
If you've ever tried to really talk with her - not just get excited about her calling herself a badass bitch, but talk about things in depth rather than just headlines -- you'd likely come to the conclusion that she should not run again.
@8, nobody's a shoo-in for any of these district council seats. Nobody, certainly none of the current incumbents, is going to get a free ride. There will be grassroots candidates in all 7 districts, and they will be doing grassrooty campaigns, door knocking, coffee parties, and so forth. Voters want choices, and they are going to get them.
Jean may have a problem campaigning in a district, since she was opposed to their creation. Not sure how you campaign for an office you wish didn't exist.
@10, re the car tab tax that went down in flames a couple years ago. Jean wanted to use it to catch up on the huge street maintenance backlog, not build more new roads.
Bikes and buses also run on city streets and need more smooth pavement, a fact sometimes lost on transit geeks and the bicycle lobby.
But she lost that debate. The proposal went to the voters with a potpourri of bits and pieces spread around, in a futile attempt to be all things to all people. With a predictable result.
I don't understand the "badass bitch" thing. After following 2 self-referential links I find that the reporter says Godden was a b.b. for sitting on a committee? And that this was somehow first in the nation, although what was first I don't understand, unless it was the first in the nation time for Jean Godden to be serving on this particular committee?
Could you please clarify her badass bitchery which she has now grasped as a lifeline to cool?
@14 re. your second paragraph: do many voters care about that sort of inside-baseball politics? I doubt it. That's a big deal to pols and a few activists. The bulk of voters, not so much.
Godden doesn't belong in office. She got in by smearing Nicastro over "strippergate" and has since presided over much more scandalous activities. She won again after smearing an already underdog opponent as a wife beater. She burns through staff like Goldy burns through SteerCo.
So let's try to avoid all the infamous Slog age-ism in this case.
And a silent badass bitch on police accountability.
But if she is running in a district with other stodgy old folks, she'll probably win easily.
