part of this was due to Conlin losing to Sawant. Conlin was, somewhat justly, perceived as the city's 'Lorax'. i was feckless witness at a community council meeting a month or so ago to a couple who gripped the microphone with "now that Conlin is gone, who will look after the trees? ... will Councilperson Sawant protect the trees??" ...everyone has their own desperate interests
I love large trees, but the city limits the size and variety of trees planted, as well as their care and feeding.
If I could afford to have a nice big douglass fir, or other large tree in my yard I would, but the liability of it falling on someones else's property, or worse giving the city an excuse to hit me up for tens of thousands of dollars to rebuild sidewalks, power lines or any other incidental impact prevents me from doing anything about it.
If you love trees, tell your member of Congress to pass legislation that will help stop global warming, like a carbon fee and dividend (See Citizens Climate Lobby for national action and Carbon Washington for state action on this issue. ) Burning fossil fuels raises the Earth's temperature which increases the breeding potential of beetles that love trees too, and too many beetles kill trees. Also the drought and warmer temperature dry out and stress trees, so when fires get started they have nice dry tinder, and burn burn burn, leaving bare, hot land instead of cool green forests, which makes the global warming worse .
