So Mark, what exactly about what you've been doing for the last decade is a sin? What's that, you're not giving details?

Quelle surprise.
2
You know, a reporter would call Driscoll first and ask if he actually wrote the letter, before publishing it and guessing whether it was real. But then, this IS the Stranger, not to be confused with actual journalism.
3
Only in fundamentalist churches and the Republican Party can you refer to yourself as "young" into your late 40s.
4
@2 Actually, those requests should be sent to the Mars Hill BOAA. The recent NYT list gaming scheme revealed that it is the Board of Advisors & Accountability that is in charge now. Mars Hill has gone corporate, which is understandable and even commendable given its size & wealth. Shit, they even have Executive Elders!
If this latest letter is genuine, then we should really start to consider "Mark Driscoll" as a brand, licensed by Mars Hill Inc., that is going through a re-branding phase.
5
Anyone who refers to themselves, in any context, as a prophet is either a charlatan, insane, or at the least a delusional loon.
6
Oh, Megan. The peen is magic—like a lightening rod, but instead of attracting electricity, it attracts the holy spirit. Bzzzzz.
7
Please! Calling Mark Driscoll an attention-addicted bigot is not fair to the rest of the attention-addicted bigots!
8
What has he got left if his "angry young prophet" days are over? Without that, he's just a common liar.
9
@2: They have famously referred to Mars Hill as a cult. I tend to agree with you, but I wouldn't expect a call to confirm would ever be returned.

I felt the crushing weight of responsibility but did not know what to do, and I lacked the abilities to figure it out. I was frustrated at my shortcomings, but needed help from people who were more experienced and mature.

I guess God doesn't return Mark Driscoll's calls either.
10
@2 You're right. My first reaction was "Like hell they'd return my call so why bother?" but just to be sure, I reached out to their PR/communications manager and have yet to receive a response.

at a debate with an evolutionist/atheist >he stands at podium and starts blah-blah-blahing about "fossils" and "evidence" and "research" and other lol bullshit >my turn >walk up to podium >mockingly place fedora on my head >tip it in his direction >proceed to make retarded hand gestures >"Huuuurrrr, look at me, I'm an atheist! I think I'm so smart! Science! science! science! herpity derp Darwin! Duuuurrrrr!" >crowd erupts into laughter and applause >atheist faggot rolls his eyes and walks off stage in defeat
12
Hey, he can stop hating gays/women and amassing money anytime.

I'm not holding my breath, though.

13
How long before we find out where he cribbed the letter from?

"The story of Oedipus is well known: Abandoned as an infant, he was taken to King Polybus, who raised him. One day, when he had grown into a youth, he came upon a dignitary riding along a mountain path. A quarrel arose, and Oedipus killed the dignitary. Later he became the husband of Queen Jocasta and ruler of Thebes. Little did he know that the man he had killed in the mountains was his father and the woman with whom he slept his mother. In the meantime, fate visited a plague on his subjects and tortured them with great pestilences. When Oedipus realized that he himself was the cause of their suffering, he put out his own eyes and wandered blind away from Thebes.

Anyone who thinks that the Communist regimes of Central Europe are exclusively the work of criminals is overlooking a basic truth: the criminal regimes were made not by criminals but by enthusiasts convinced they had discovered the only road to paradise. They defended that road so valiantly that they were forced to execute many people. Later it became clear that there was no paradise, that the enthusiasts were therefore murderers.

Then everyone took to shouting at the Communists: You're the ones responsible for our country's misfortunes (it had grown poor and desolate), for its loss of independence (it had fallen into the hands of the Russians), for its judicial murders!

And the accused responded: We didn't know! We were deceived! We were true believers! Deep in our hearts we are innocent!"- Milan Kundera from The Incredible Lightness of Being.

Christ, what an asshole.

I'm anxiously awaiting the fall of his empire and the public shaming of this contemporary snake-oil salesman.

There are skeletons in Driscoll's closet, you can be sure of that. I'm just waiting for the fall. Someone will, at some point, unleash what they know about this bigot and I, along with many others, will cheer his downfall.

So, any bets on when this will happen? Anyone? I say within the next 12 months a scandal will expose this asshole and taken him down.
18
@17: I doubt they're big enough to affect the true believers or bankrupt the church.

Plus, you're assuming some of the flock aren't also douchebags, after all, they eat up the idea that women and gays are sinful creatures.

"Christian establishments tend to great ignorance and corruption, all of which facilitate the execution of mischievous projects."

- James Madison, letter to William Bradford, Jr. (1774)
