Attempts to isolate followers from the rest of the world is a key marker of cults, and of dangerous megalomaniacs.

Is it appropriate Slog ettiquette to respond to this thread sometime maybe Wednesday afternoon? You've provided a ridiculous amount of links. I want to read every single word of every one of them before I formulate an opinion. Uninformed voting, as I'm sure you'll agree, is the reason for the shithole we're in. Going half-assed isn't The Stranger way!!

@1 I had the exact same thought...

I'm gonna pistol whip the next guy who says "shenanigans!"

Not much of a scandal. Actually it smells like tricky church PR to me. Yes that Driscoll is a real badboy, isn't he. Ooh, the Church is trying to censor part of one of his sermons, we'd better all listen to it or read the transcript.

Mark Driscoll said that Jesus made MISTAKES!

GASP!

Next, he'll be telling us that Jesus pissed and crapped.

No. No. No.

Jesus never sweated; he always smelled like fresh meadows and sunshine. His feet smelled of lavender. No funk on Jesus. No, sir. Not Jesus.

I'll hear none of this insanity about Jesus being fully human.

Don't you dare say Jesus had erections. No, he did NOT ejaculate.

NEVER.
EVER.

I declare SHENANIGINS!!

The bigger story is the PR spin Mars Hill is doing for their Global campaign. Asked for money with a video of Sutton Turner overseas to help with churches in Ethiopia- turns out a majority of that money went to Everett and Bellevue real estate and remodels. Some went to Ethiopia, but super misleading. In my opinion the 6 min scrubbing is something those in the church can debate about, but seems like Mars Hill should have some financial consequences for misusing finances. They seem to be less and less of a nonproift church these days with their recent changes in HR and book dealings.

Is he actively cultivating the sweaty, balding, fat preacher look, or is God punishing him with it?

Jesus, why don't they all just up and move to Guyana already.

Mark is a great teacher - I was in the sermon, and he was joking ...
16
#15: I'd love to know why, then, the church is trying to scrub the video from the internet.
17
#12...I'd say it's more the "creepy singles bar dude/windowless black 'Free Candy' van driver" look.

Why would anybody ever want to hear a sermon from a preacher who looks THAT sleazy?
18
The congregants should think twice before drinking any Kool Aid he hands out.

I blame Amazon.

Such a non-story. Just another slam directed at an entity vocally opposed to homosexuality. I get it. Stranger, I'm still amused by you... it's just that my reading glasses continue to dim whenever I read anything from you anymore. You're just so obviously skewed. Try not to behave like the abused recluse and stand tall on your merits!
22
You're a non-story. neonguy.

It was a joke. I thought it was funny. The sermon had absolutely NOTHING to do with the evils of internet. Read it, form your own opinion...

Mark Driscoll's quote, in context, was this: "Now, some of you may have heard we’re a Reformed church. Don’t Google it, don’t blow your head up. We love Jesus, read your Bible, stay off the Internet. It’s all shenanigans anyways. Nonetheless, nonetheless, what we mean by reformed is this. Out of the historic Protestant tradition, that God seeks, that God saves, and that God is sovereign over the seeking and saving process. Now, what some will do is they’ll turn this into fatalism instead of faithfulness. And they’ll say, “Well, if God’s going to save them anyways, why should we speak? Why should we plant a church? Why should we send a missionary? Why should we preach the gospel? Why should we make an invitation? Why should we pursue them to talk about Jesus? If God’s going to save them, he’ll save them.” And God’s in heaven going, “I’m sovereign over the ends—who I will save—and the means—who I will send.” You are part of God’s sovereign plan for the salvation of someone else."

#21 That whole homophobia thing flies in the face of the welcoming, hip image Mars Hill tries to cultivate for itself, doesn't it?

This is a wealthy, ambitious corporation masquerading as a church. It deserves all the attention The Stranger gives it.
25
#21 - neonguy, Right? Next thing you know The Stranger will be slamming people who are vocally opposed to Asians, or vocally opposed to the Deaf, or vocally opposed to Buddhists, or vocally opposed to people who name themselves after noble gases. Like, how dare they take a stance against anyone who favors discrimination and injustice and inequality and who refuses to back those who want to make a subgroup of humans into second class citizens, criminals or crispy corpses. So skewed indeed!

P.S. - You should hit Mark up for a bump in pay. After all, you had to go into the trenches with these nefarious shenanigan-makers.
26
How is anyone surprised anymore by the explicit cult behavior of this man and his tribe?
28
From that welovemarshill.com site I just learned that Mark Driscoll like for his men followers to watch UFC fights together so they can learn about being a manly man. Did I read that right?
29
@28, yeppers.
30
Is anyone defending Mark Driscoll now? Anyone?
31
Okay, I see what is going on now. There is a slander campaign going on with this church now. Because of his stance, and because of the ideologies layperson s in today's so called christian churches are demanding be brought in (worldliness/secularism), now he is a target. With as many churches with leaders who have comitted grave atrocities, if you do not conform to what certain people want, who are obviously no where interested or even hate the gospel of Jesus Christ by their deeds, they wil search every rock to destroy you. The problems Mars Hill faces is one of wanting to accept the worlds money as a mega church but not all secular society's conditions. All chueches big and have those same issues, it is that they take no stances on biblical standards and allow anything. Every apostle in the new testament encourages standards and things to stay away from. But today lay christian knows so much more how a church should be, they along with heretical leaders are destroying the witness of the true Christian church.
