I have problems with math. Not in the sense of not being able to do it (scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC level myself). It has to do with taking "math" or calculation and making it an exclusive sport (I was also a very low ranked mathelete once as well).
We all do math all the time. The amount of processing to walk down the street and avoid a puddle easily exceeds most of the math done by most of the computers doing credit card processing on a given day. Software developers struggle to approach the ability of the brain to analyze the information coming from a human eye or ear.
So to say that people need to be taught math seems backward. We already know math, we do it all the time. Math in schools is just an explicit expression of principals in a visual language. But the implicit ability to calculate is switched on inside us, and runs day and night.
