The so-tired-of-this-shit cadence of “Since the Supreme Court decided it will not protect women’s access to health care, I will,” is welcome.
2
This is awesome! All the sane women legislators need to join forces on this and tear the supreme court a new one.
3
Seriously, thank God we have Sen Murray! Not just for this reason, look at veteran's affairs. Not exactly the most popular thing when Murray was 1st elected, but now a high profile issue! Too bad the Senate doesn't have 60 or so women.
4
Too bad Republicans will never let it through the House, and probably won't help break the filibuster in the Senate even.

Also, DRAFT PATTY MURRAY!!

Forget Hillary, I want a real Democrat.
5
Exactly @4
6
This is the correct response. The body responsible for Hobby Lobby is Congress (although the Supreme Court did not have to go as far as it did). It was Congress, by passing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, that invited practitioners of religion to demand all kinds of special treatment. And it is Congress that is responsible for repealing that ill-considered statute.

The best way to help Congress do that is for a host of religious minorities to start filing lawsuits and demanding special treatment. We need to shame the Republicans into realizing that this legislation (as interpreted by the Supremes) is a complete disaster.
7
Why is nobody mentioning that Hobby Lobby's insurance previously covered contraceptives before Obamacare passed?
8
Go, Patty, Go!!! And I hope the voters of Washington have the sense to re-elect her when she runs next time.
9
Hobby Lobby covers ALL types of birth control except abortifacients. Y'know, the kind of "birth control" that removes fetuses that already exist.

Get your facts straight.
10
@9

Prove it.
11
@9
Get your facts straight- no abortifacients were covered.
Hobby Lobby simply 'believes' that to be true despite all evidence to the contrary.
Take a sex ed class.
12
While I agree with the sentiment, one should never use drop shadows on a stencil font.
13
"The bill does not amend that law. It explicitly preserves federal rules that provide an exemption for churches and other houses of worship that have religious objections to providing coverage for some or all contraceptives.

The bill also preserves an accommodation devised by President Obama for nonprofit religious organizations, like colleges, hospitals and charities, that have religious objections."

so WHAT does it do exactly?
14
Repeal The Religious Freedom Restoration Act or RFRA and remove the Free Exercise clause from the Establishment Clause! Clearly it is not clear enough for the theocrats.
15
Oh for fucks sake #9. Don't be stupid. Take a goddamned sex ed class.
16
#13 As I understand it, it applies to what Hobby Lobby changed- corporations. There have always been exemptions for actual religious organizations, but HL opens the door for any closely held corporation to discriminate based on their "religion".
17
Please read the Supreme Court's decision before you take up arms against Hobby Lobby. It was far more limiting and specific than the media and many politicians make it out to be.

I'm not against contraceptives or a woman's right to birth control by any means, quite frankly I'm a big proponent for it, but I don't understand why people think they have the right to force those who own businesses to provide services to their employees they may find objectionable.
18
@9: ROFL HUH you don't know what a fetus is.
19
Patty Murray gonna paddle that ass, preferably with the paddle that has the holes drilled into it so it has that extra whistle and sting.
20
A "fetus," #9? Really? Even the most extreme anti-choicers only claim that "abortifacient" drugs like Plan B and Ella harm, at best, zygotes. Fetuses don't come into being until 8 weeks after a human egg is fertilized. You seem VERY confused.
21
Actually, #9 is mostly correct. Hobby Lobby provides coverage for 16 types of birth control. Those categorized as abortifacient are what they do not want to cover. That means ECPs ( emergency conception prevention) which include day-after pills (whether or not they are actually abortifacient, since some aren't) and copper-T IUDs specifically (as they are in the category of ECPs because they can be inserted up to 5 days after conception), and abortion (which is pretty horrible if that's your version of birth control).

Ultimately, these are still available, but Hobby Lobby is taking the stance that you are "on your own" for post conception contraceptive measures. It doesn't mean you can't get birth control, it just means they want their employees to think ahead, not react.

Additionally, some contraceptive measures they are excluding aren't abortifacient, (as I noted) but are in the same category as those that are. That issue just indicates a need to properly categorize contraceptive measures.

Finally, people are making more out of this than it should be. Right and left wings. Special interest groups are using partial information and aggrandizement to produce anger and fear. This is a simple case that has been oversensationalized. I learned the above in twenty minutes of Google searching and reading more than headlines and pop news sites.
22
@12: While I agree with the sentiment, that isn't a stencil font. That looks like Times New Roman, which is the go-to serif typef--OH GOD I CLICKED ON IT.
23
@17: If anybody was forcing Hobby Lobby to provide abortions, I'd be sympathetic to what you wrote. That's not what was happening, though. Hobby Lobby is required to provide insurance as part of an employee's compensation, just like every other company, with minimum levels of coverage, just like every other company. How the employee chooses to use that insurance coverage is none of Hobby Lobby's business, or anyone else's for that matter.
24
Sen. Patty (Dumbest Senator) Murry may propose a bill to change this. It may even pass the Senate. It will die in the House. End of story.
25
So tired of the Liberal bullshit who only cater to the lowest common denominators amongst us that couldn't decipher shit if it hit them in the face. Hobby Lobby provides options and you low life piece of shits know this. As a Libertarian who hates Liberals, dislikes Republicans and knows the Supreme Court doesn't do its job holding up the Constitution, you can all KISS MY A55. Go cry about that you weak losers.

Signed
F-you...
26
so wait, Hobby Lobby can decline to pay for ANYTHING as long as they sincerely believe it is an abortifacient?
27
God how the socialist dem libs can be so two faced......"health care decisions are not the bosses business, period"! Indeed!!?? Well whoop-dee-frickin-doo.......paying for other folks contraceptives shouldn't be anyone elses business or obligation, either. Ya flop on your back, throw your legs in the air and enjoy sex is nice.Lots of us have had the experience, but those involved should sure nuff pay for the damn condom themselves.
28
GO, Senator Patty Murray!!! Pig roast coast to coast!
Boycott Hobby Lobby! Denounce the pigs in robes
who have shamefully made the Supreme Court the
Extreme Court.
29
Is she really that stupid? The SCOTUS didn't rule it was okay to not provide birth control, it ruled the abortion drugs didn't have to be provided. All these drugs are still available, not just paid for by the insurance provided by the employer.

I live in WA and Murray is one of my senators, makes me ashamed even though I never voted for her.

30
The Supreme Court is the law. They decide what is constitutional and unconstitutional. Do we really think the Senate can change that. Hobby Lobby is a family owned private corporation. They are not traded on the stock market. They are private. Even though we may not like the choice, do we really want the government telling "private corporations" what the government wants. I do not.
31
Seriously! Birth control us the most important item on yor agenda today? Heaven help you. You probably can't balance your checkbook you mindless dolts. Why doesn't madam Murray just try to get increased funding for free contraceptives from the gov'ment? Because nothing will satisfy a "I can't handle my life by myself I need the gov'ment to do it for me" liberal like a nice cold glass of "you must agree with me" coolaid. In case you haven't noticed there are a few more pressing issues that need attention.
32
Senator Murray is being untruthful when she states that “People across the country understand that if bosses can deny birth control they can deny vaccines, HIV treatment or other basic health services for employees or their dependents," in her challenge to the Hobby Lobby decision.

The Court assumed that FREE contraception INCLUDING the four at issue was OK when it stated,

"We will assume that the interest in guaranteeing cost-free access to the four challenged contraceptive methods is compelling within the meaning of RFRA."

The Court specifically suggested that the LEAST-RESTRICTIVE standard of the law in getting women free contraception could be accomplished by the government providing such coverage when it stated:

"The most straightforward way of doing this would be for the Government to assume the cost of providing the four contraceptives at issue to any women who are unable to obtain them under their health-insurance policies due to their employers’ religious objections."

Finally, please read the decision which states: "THIS DECISION CONCERNS ONLY THE CONTRACEPTIVE MANDATE and should not be understood to hold that all insurance-coverage mandates, e.g., for VACCINATIONS or BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS, must necessarily fail if they conflict with an employer's religious beliefs. Nor does it provide a shield for employers who might cloak illegal discrimination as a religious practice." (emphasis added)
34
You liberals amaze me. It caterwaul about the freedom of choice but you want't to coerce someone else to underwrite you own personal decisions? As the poet philosopher said: "WTF??" Birth control is a choice (as you all constantly remind the world); it's not a health issue. Pay for it yourself, dammit!

Please wait...
