That's interesting. I've never heard someone come out and make it sound like it was a "choice". This guy does. I wonder if, now that being gay is not that big of a deal in the U.S., people will go back to referring to it as a " sexual preference" again.

@5 - I don't think that's what he intended with his comments, though I can see how they can be read that way. I think he probably just meant that he didn't come out, even to himself, until his early 20s. You are probably right, thought, that people who are inclined to think that sexual orientation is a matter of choice are going to read his comments that way.

Ferlo is from Pittsburgh, which is about a decade and a half behind the times in terms of politically correct lingo. It is not unusual for folks there, even allies, to use terminology like "sexual preference" instead of "sexual orientation." That's just the way the city is. I say that with love and affection - I grew up there and lived there until I moved to the deep South 12 years ago (and I long every day to go back...)

Ferlo's orientation was an open secret back in his days on city council. No one really talked about it, but most people, and certainly the people in his district, knew. He was (and to the best of my knowledge, still is) considered to actually have the interests of his constituents at heart.
