As Dan Savage groggily told you in the Half-Assed Morning News, House Republicans last night dropped a controversial bill that would have banned abortion after twenty weeks. Even Republican women were railing against the bill. But now Republicans will have to contend with very angry religious conservatives. They even made poor Rick Santorum frown!

Senator Lindsey Graham wants to avoid talking about legitimate rape.

But before you start thinking Republicans have changed their tune, Senator Lindsey Graham says the bill will be back. "We need to find a consensus position on the rape exception," Graham assured evangelicals last night. He explained that Republicans "just need to find a way definitionally to not get us into a spot where we're debating what legitimate is. That's not the cause. We're not here debating legitimate rape." So they're still interested in controlling the bodies and lives of women, but they're not willing to Akin themselves over the issue. And can we talk about how disgusting it is that "legitimate rape" has apparently entered the political lexicon? The word "rape" does not need a modifier. Rape is rape. Let's not allow Republicans turn the legitimacy of rape claims into a political football, okay?

In other news that could potentially upset the Christian right, the Republican-run Senate voted yesterday to approve an amendment declaring that climate change "is not a hoax." The amendment even passed 98 to 1! But wait. When did Republicans suddenly wake up to reality?

Explaining his vote, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said that there was "Biblical evidence" of climate change, but that humans were not responsible for it.

So climate change is happening, but it's not our fault. It's part of God's plan. That's the Senate's official stance. In conclusion, if you didn't vote in the midterm elections last year, you are an asshole and this is all your fault.
