He is and will always be our friend.

Is Spock the best sci-fi character EVER? If not, he's WAY up in the pantheon. Who even comes close?

Nimoy will be remembered, that's for sure.

How sad... he will be missed.

I'm listening to Amazing Grace on bagpipes. And of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most.... human.
7
A good long life, a (hopefully, relatively) peaceful death, and a legacy that will last generation. RIP.

uh-oh, i've been censored again. Note to self: stop using language that I see written on Slog.

His final tweet was beautiful: https://twitter.com/TheRealNimoy/status/…

@2: Well, I'm thinking HAL 9000 came close but then again HAL never released any records. Yeah, Spock was number 1.

I've always been more of a Star Wars fan than one of Star Trek. But Nimoy's Spock was such a huge pop-culture/sci-fi juggernaut that I have to admit his performance of that character was a bigger influence on my life than any of the characters in George Lucas' world. I still think that Star Trek's inherently positive view of the future of humanity is something that is generally sorely lacking in new Sci-Fi. And Nimoy's iconic character was such a big part of it all, probably the biggest part. I'm not sad that he's passed, because he was old and did some amazing shit. I'm sad that the future won't have the real Spock any more, because we need his reminders about rationality and patience more than ever.

"We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human."

He was by far my favorite on Star Trek. I had such a crush on him growing up and practiced for hours in the mirror to get that raised eyebrow thing just right. As a surprise my parents took geeky bespectacled 14 year old me to one of his poetry readings. Seeing him smile and laugh freaked me right the fuck out, and I was too shy to speak to him, but somewhere I still have the book he was signing that night.
I'll miss him.

He's dead, Jim.

Generally I like ST because I am a science fiction fan. But some of the TOS programs were over the top. I will always remember Mr. Spock doing a mind meld with a lump of concrete.
16
An absolute icon. Nimoy was a damn good actor and took Spock very seriously, which was part of what made the show so powerful. Kirk and Spock are a brotherhood/romance/friendship/life-partnership for the ages.
17
Of the Star Trek Trinity only the douchebag lives.
18
Gutted.

Managed to get into one of his panels a couple of years back at ECCC, and listening to him talk was amazing. He led an incredible life and we were so fortunate to be a part of it. LLAP.

I was a candystriper and I got to serve mr. nimroy dinner a few times while he was hospitalized at Overlake a decade or so ago. He was charming and gracious even in a hospital gown. What a gentleman and what a loss.

Too bad nothing we see on TV or Computers is human. BUT perhaps there are physicists working on that reality, 1000s of Einsteins concocting equations as we speak. The acting profession will play a very minor role in this amazing progress.

"gaunt faced" as the lead descriptor kind of a strange choice.

I'm not usually one to be saddened by the death of someone who lived a long, fulfilling life, no matter if I was a fan or not. We all die, after all, and if the individual lived well and had love in his or her life, where's the loss? But this one hurts. I think it's because Leonard Nimoy was a boundless source of positivity, a person who always gave, and was completely guileless. He wrote terrible poetry with titles like "I Guess I'm Just an Old Fashioned Spaceman" and sang terrible songs about Bilbo Baggins, but his enthusiasm and goodwill were infectious. Somehow that came through in his acting, especially Spock but even in roles like the pompous pop psychologist he portrayed in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

In short, the world lost someone whose mere presence made it a better place, something that won't be said about most of us, even if we accomplish good things. Because most of us just aren't that nice. That's the loss here.

RIP Mr. Nimoy. I'll be watching the TOS rerun tomorrow night with tears in my eyes.

"I'll be watching the TOS rerun tomorrow night with tears in my eyes."

If you provide video for us, the Slog News-less weekend will be absolutely fabulous and justified. Thanks in advance. I've probably watched too many Lifetime Channel chick-flicks with my wife to find people crying as a stimulant.
25
I have no comment on the matter.

You will be missed!

People will miss him.

It's impossible to measure the effect that Mr. Nimoy had on the world. How many of us were supported and comforted or inspired and moved by his portrayal of Spock ... too many to count.

I've also been impressed by the dignity and grace with which he handled Star Trek fans' reactions to him; he was gracious and generous to so many people in so many ways.

I'm so very saddened by his passing, and yet I also want to say that although we've lost a good and great man in losing Mr. Nimoy, Spock is ageless. On my DVD's of the original series, he is forever a blue-shirted 35, and he will live in my mind and in my heart for as long as I do.

My heart goes out to Mr. Nimoy's family and friends, for great as our loss is, they've lost even more than we have.

I will always love you, Mr. Nimoy, not just your most famous character, but you, yourself -- the you revealed in your autobiographies, in your poetry, and yes, in Spock. We know that you are not he, but he would have been a lesser character in every way without your lively intelligence, warm heart, and deep humanity.

Awww. Dammit.

He couldn't live forever, I suppose. But he was a great guy and an icon. I'm sad to hear of his passing.
33
@15: I was feeling all sad and then your first line made me laugh out loud.
35
Nimoy's portrayal of an aloof, stoic, logic - driven alien - the ultimate outsider - was a huge influence on me as a child navigating the incomprehensibly painful world of adult dysfunction. But the other side of Spock: the intense curiosity, the wry, sere sense of humor, the ability to reflect our own better qualities wasn't lost on me either. He became a role model, both in character and out, and I can't help feeling very old right now, as l contemplate the loss of a significant part of my childhood, and tremendous influence on my adult personality. Go boldly, Mr. Nimoy; you served the needs of the many - and the one - with honor and dignity, and you will be missed.
36
No love for "In Search Of"?
37
Not only did he act a brilliant, iconic role that will live on for ages, he also seems to have been a really decent human being. May his memory be a blessing.
38
He was my favorite character on the series. Tobacco took its time but finally killed him. How sad.

Please wait...
