This is heartbreaking. I wish that this story and the many others like it were crowding the media to say DON'T LOOK AWAY WHITE AMERICANS - LISTEN! Thank you for sharing.
The most disturbing part to me is your last sentence.
I'm old enough to remember the civil rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s as part of my childhood, and I embraced that movement. In those years, it felt like significant progress was being made toward eliminating racism in this country. In recent years, however, it feels like we've either been backsliding toward more racism, or I've been blinded into thinking that we had made more progress than we have. It feels like we've removed blatant racism from polite society, but have not conquered the deeper racism that remains hidden in the heart of too many white Americans.
Absolutely tragic. I'm completely overcome by this ongoing hatred for our neighbors, our fellow Americans. It just shatters me. So I can't imagine what black people must be feeling. Is it really just more of the same, or will there be a breaking point?
