"Deeply troubled" and "mental health" making an appearance! I'd expect the Stranger to be one of the last places attempting to humanize a racist, murderous monster like Roof.

The murder of the Charleston Nine was an orchestrated act of domestic terrorism. The burning of 6 Black Churches was an act of domestic terrorism. That dude sitting on the ferry with the Nazi disguise is an act of domestic terrorism. America is infected with racist-hate bigotry.

There are ways to frame the "mental health" aspect. One way is to use it as an excuse, a forgiveness, an example that racism isn't at the heart of the issue. Another would be as an example, a demonstration that racism itself is a form of mental imbalance. Then there's the milquetoast approach, where it's offered lamely without context and never followed up.

FromDylann Roof's "manifesto" (emphasis mine):
Here I would also like to touch on the idea of a Norhtwest Front. I think this idea is beyond stupid. Why should I for example, give up the beauty and history of my state to go to the Norhthwest? To me the whole idea just parralells the concept of White people running to the suburbs. The whole idea is pathetic ...

As for "humanizing" Mr. Storm Roof, the guy is human- as am I - as are you - and eliminationist ideation is commonplace here on Slog. Humans are a nasty piece of work.

If he disappeared one day would anyone mind? Sounds like he has a pretty miserable life, being a racist and probably homophobic example of human excrement.

To summarize: White Racial Terrorism is getting worse, but it's not really getting worse, but it potentially could be getting worse. Maybe I missed something.

One thing I didn't miss: the white power skinhead on the ferry was some "mentally disabled" charity case well known around Port Orchard:

Of course Ansel knew this too, but he couldn't resist the awesome Nazi armband-ferry combo pic for his incoherent story.

@8, Ansel wasn't there. He simply interviewed the person who took the picture...who didn't interact with the man at all. None of us found out the man was mentally disabled until the day after the article was posted. I mean, I suppose Ansel could have retracted the story, or commented on that fact (and whether, for example, "mental disabilities" are any excuse). I agree, though, that it was not one of Ansel's better works.

Stop calling them "White Separatist Groups". They are white supremacist groups. Any sentiments for separation from the United States are incidental, and paralleled by the wish to separate from State of Washington.

There is a much broader movement for the recognition of our true nation here in Cascadia, simply to recognize that our real affinity group, our value as well as economic and political interests, lie in Cascadia, not obedience of the NY-WashDC 'thing' making perpetual war and financial predation on the people of the world.
