Let's just put it out there:
1) Boys get away with shit that girls never get away with. That said, I doubt the lawsuit has anything to do with the kid's gender.

2) The people bringing this lawsuit are a bunch of assholes, but I'm going to wager that they have been driven to be assholes because . . .

3) The kid's parents probably think her feeding a bunch of wild animals is cute and that she is "expressing" herself. Fuck that. If my car was covered in bird shit every morning I'd be pissed off too. If I talked to the parents and was told their kid has the right to do whatever she wanted, even if it was causing property damage to my house and car, I'd be driven to become an asshole too. A lot of things in this world suck. One of those things is parents who don't know how to parent their own goddamn kids. And Seattle is full of those morons. I've seen parents allow their kids to get into truly dangerous situations because they are "expressing" themselves. I swear to God that if I could close every Montessori school in the country I would. The people who send their kids to those schools are nearly as bad as the right-wing fundies who home school their kids.

4) There is a painful shortage of grown up adults in this country. Kids are kids. They need to be allowed to be kids. They need to have time to fuck around and learn things. They need to have the freedom to explore the world. They don't need their parents to rush in to save them every time they fall off their bikes. At the same time, they need someone to enforce some fucking limits. Damaging other people's property sounds to me like one of those limits. At the same time, adults needs to be able to resolve disputes without calling in the damn lawyers.

For the record, I don't live in that neighborhood. My neighbors have their own asshole to worry about.

I threw a few scraps of food to some of my local murder of crows a couple summers ago while barbequing on my deck. They happily snatched up the bits and gobbled them and/or took them somewhere else to eat.

Ever since, I've found nuggets of moss left on my deck. There is nowhere near for the moss to fall there without some kind of assistance. I think the crows bring me gifts, too, based on this one interaction. Therefore, I know that this story about the girl is true.

That said, I don't feed them constantly. Practically never, actually. I can imagine that things could get out of hand fast if that were the case.

That said again, suing a family for poop on one's property without any direct evidence that it is related to that family is about the shittiest (pun intended) thing a human can do. Screw those people.

FWIW, I once had the misfortune of dining as a guest at the Seattle Tennis Club, outdoors, in the summer, and there were rats running amongst us. This was well before the Portage Bay child began feeding animals that have allegedly attracted other animals that urban dwellers have demonized as "undesirable." More recently, here in West Seattle, the construction boom has brought the rats out of the woodwork, so to speak. In the last week, I have seen several - one unfortunate fellow lay dead on the sidewalk near Fauntleroy Ave - before dark. They are trying to live amongst us, just like the cute and desirable bunny rabbits that have built an impressive warren in and around Jack Block Park.

Stop feeding the birds. Go feed animals that need it. Have the little girl help at a pet shelter. Get her a bird feeder for the backyard.

If this were an awesome movie, there'd be this moment when the girl waves hand and a herd of bison charge the while a brown bear eats the Neighbors' lawyer.

This isn't a case of greedy neighbors. The parents of this little girl are terrible neighbors and poor role models as adults. They have escalated this beyond reason. Filling the feeders 6 times a day!! Sounds like the lawsuit was a last resort.

Not every injustice that happens to females is about sexism. Not every injustice that happens to minorities is about racism or other bigotry.
Sometimes it's just people being dicks. In this situation, that ought to be considered bad enough.

BTW, I do agree that the girls parents are not setting the best example here.

The stranger might want to do some actual research. I have seen hundreds of pigeons and crows at the Mann's house at one time, have seen the feeding process, and have seen their daily washing regimen where the Manns hose off their entire property daily to get rid of the bird feces. The Manns clearly recognize the health hazards of the birds, but do not care.
Crow and pigeon shit covers the neighbor houses, cars, and decks to the extent that outside enjoyment is very difficult. The Manns feed peanuts, and the birds drop the peanut shells all over the neighborhood, creating severe allergy problems for neighborhood kids and their friends.
A lawsuit was a last resort; neighbors have pleaded with the Manns, gone to the city council, spoken with law enforcement, to no avail. The damage to the property is real; houses need to be repainted, cars are covered in bird shit, peanut shells everywhere.
This is not a "wealthy person" problem. This is a health hazard, an issue of property destruction, as well as a major neighbor nuisance problem.
Half-assed reporting (is it even that) only perpetuates incorrect information and ignorance. Does The Stranger even care to attempt real journalism?

Those who filed a lawsuit because a kid is feeding crows needs to get a life. Or get hip to the idea that humans aren't on the planter alone. Leave the kid alone you emotionally ill, egotistical people. The crows would be in your neighborhood anyway. The lake is right there. Have you no clue what the real World is like?
