"“How did I get elected? " Kasich says, referring to one his early campaigns. "Nobody was -- I didn’t have anyone for me. We just got an army of people -- and many women who left their kitchens to go out and go door to door and to put yard signs up for me all the way back when you know when things were different. Now you call homes and everybody is out working, but at that time, early days it was really an army of the women that really helped me to get elected."
Gah. All he'd have had to do was toss in "This was the 70's, remember" as an aside while he was telling the story. Or explain to people that he was talking about the 70's. Instead he looks like he thinks ladies should still be in their kitchens. (I mean, he's a Republican, so he probably really does think that, but you'd think he'd have an interest in wanting to appear otherwise now that women have the vote.)
@10: Thanks for the link to the full context. It really does sound better with that included. He maybe could have said "homes" instead of "kitchens" and avoided some of the blowback, I suppose. It's still clear that he's offering appreciation for their help either way, and that this is being blown out of proportion (as much as can be when it's a candidate that has always been jockeying for the not-last position).
Maybe why you couldn't rustle up many lady voters, chum.
Also, for the past 40 years - 20 years were under Democratic administrations.
