@1:

If workers have to put in 60 hours or more per week just to get by, then I think the answer to your question should be pretty obvious.

Here is a photo I took myself in 2014 of the Foxconn factory on the outskirts of Shenzhen, where many Apple devices are assembled.

If you zoom in on the grey building, you can see the infamous "suicide nets" that were installed to prevent workers from throwing themselves off the roof, in addition to barbed-wire fencing around the roof's perimeter.

@5 The suicide rate at Foxconn is lower than the general population.

News Flash: Capitalist corporation is capitalist.

Also, around 2004 I led a technical team @ Microsoft that utilized Chinese programmer/analysts. Pricing documents weren't shared with me, but the word in the hallway was that they were working for a buck an hour.

@4:

What part of "The low wages force laborers to work overtime, to the point where overtime hours make up 40 percent of their gross income, in order to cover living expenses" isn't clear to you?

Furthermore, if they need a scooter to get to and from their 60 hour-plus per week job, then it's pretty essential to their livelihood they have it, yes?
10
@6, that may be. My point was, the nets are real, I've seen them with my own eyes.

As an aside, one can't help being struck by the resemblance between that workplace and a prison.

@6:

It would appear then the suicide nets are having their intended effect...

We have known that Foxconn is basically a slave driving outfit for years now. The simple fact of the matter is that Apple loving Americans simply do not care.

Hell, how many liberals working in The Stranger's building right now have iPhones? I bet it is more than a few. Liberal or conservative, the love for the iPhone is simply stronger than the supposed love for fellow humans and workers.

@12

Ansel certainly has his problems as a journalist, but if workers are indeed putting in an average of (over) 60 hours per week, your "they're saving up to buy boats and jewels and other luxuries" just doesn't hold water.

@12:

He's simply paraphrasing the results of the study to which he linked, which you would know if you had read it. So it would appear, in this particular instance at least, he's more informed than you are.
16
@13: What, do you think Android workers in have it better in China?
18
@17:

That's not the relevant point here. Working discretionary OT because you want extra money to buy luxury goods =/= working (frequently mandatory) OT because you need the extra money to pay for basic necessities.

Do people remember the story about how when Jobs (I think it was Jobs) decided at the last minute that the phones needed glass screens instead of plastic ones, the company (don't remember if it was FoxConn or not, but it may have been) rousted workers out of their dormitory beds to get it all done in time for the deadline.

Oh look, it was indeed FoxConn: http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-job…

"If workers have to put in 60 hours or more per week just to get by, then I think the answer to your question should be pretty obvious."

But it's pretty sad if you have to go to the comments section to get the context that should be in a story.

I'm hopeful they are paid at least $2/hr to make these: www.ibtimes.com/anonymous-masks-photo-st… of course the Chinese made ones maybe not... www.made-in-china.com/products-search/ho…

@17

I don't think you've understood the argument I've made about averages. If the report said some workers were putting in 60 hours, you might have a point, but the report says all of them are, and you don't.

@22: By dint of my internet wizardry, your second link rises from the grave! http://www.ibtimes.com/anonymous-masks-p…
Your first link is beyond my considerable powers to reanimate.
26
@16: Probably not, but the article is about Apple. But I am sure Samsung loving Americans don't care about their phones being built by child slave labor either.
27
What does that equal in buying power? If you were really doing analysis you'd include that information. If you're just trying to quickly fill your Slog post quota, you know, don't bother.

Please wait...
